Company overview

AN2 Therapeutics is a clinical-stage drug developer working on blood disorders, infectious diseases and cancer. It uses its boron chemistry platform to design small-molecule medicines. Its candidates include epetraborole for polycythemia vera, a disorder involving excess red blood cells, and M. abscessus lung disease, and AN2-502998 for Chagas disease. Most programs are early- or mid-stage, and none has established clinical proof of concept.

The company has no approved products and has generated no revenue. Investors have funded its operations through stock offerings, while public and private agencies and foundations primarily fund its global-health programs through grants that do not require issuing shares. Earning meaningful revenue depends on obtaining regulatory approval and bringing a drug to market; continued development requires additional funding. Outside research organizations conduct much of the development work, and third-party manufacturers make its drug supplies.

Important drug rights come from licenses, including the Anacor license for epetraborole, which AN2 must maintain by meeting its obligations. Brii Biosciences holds exclusive rights to specified products, including epetraborole, in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. AN2’s agreement with Adjuvant also requires affordable access in specified developing countries, including certain sales at or slightly above cost, limiting its pricing freedom there.

AN2’s results depend more on clinical development and regulatory success than on its large licensors’ sales; watch Brii Biosciences, which holds regional development and commercialization rights to epetraborole.

  • AN2 depends on Pfizer’s Anacor subsidiary for the patent rights and technical know-how needed to develop epetraborole, rather than on Pfizer’s revenue from selling medicines. Watch changes to that license or its patent protection: losing important rights could limit AN2’s ability to develop and commercialize the drug.

  • AN2 uses GSK’s licensed methods for making its compounds, including epetraborole, and works with GSK on tuberculosis research; the tie is not to GSK’s medicine and vaccine sales. News on their tuberculosis work is more relevant to AN2 than GSK’s overall sales growth, with AN2’s global-health programs funded primarily by grants that do not dilute shareholders.

If GSK’s report describes progress in its tuberculosis research with AN2 Therapeutics, readers can gauge whether that grant-funded program is advancing; GSK’s medicine sales are not the key link.

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

AN2 Therapeutics has no product revenue and uses cash and investments to fund its drug-development work, so the Fed’s policy rate can change the interest income it earns on those balances.

AN2 Therapeutics has no products for sale, so its research spending and operating cash use show how it is advancing drug candidates and how long its funding can support that work.
