Company

Company overview

ADTRAN Holdings supplies communications providers with the equipment and software to deliver broadband to homes and businesses and connect those users to larger networks. It also sells optical systems that link metropolitan and regional networks and data centers, serving network operators, internet content providers and enterprises. Hardware and software sales generate most revenue, through direct sales and distributors.

Customers also pay ADTRAN for network design, installation, maintenance and support. Its Mosaic One cloud software helps operators manage fiber access and mesh Wi-Fi networks. These services support the same networks as its equipment rather than forming a separate business.

Much of the business comes from large communications providers, with one international provider contributing a substantial share of revenue. Sales depend on their network spending and deployment schedules. Providers can take months or years to approve products, and supply agreements generally do not guarantee minimum purchases. Deliveries also depend on key components available from only one or a few suppliers. Required regulatory approvals and certifications can limit where ADTRAN may sell, while its credit agreement restricts additional borrowing, investments and other corporate actions.

  • Calix competes with ADTRAN for broadband providers’ spending on fiber access equipment, subscriber Wi-Fi and cloud management. Watch adoption of Calix’s combined platform and managed services: it shows how providers are buying the network and subscriber tools that both companies sell.

  • Ciena competes with ADTRAN for service providers’ and cloud-network operators’ spending on equipment that carries traffic over fiber. Ciena’s optical-networking business is the part to watch for demand to expand network capacity, which also matters to ADTRAN’s Optical Networking revenue.

  • Nokia challenges ADTRAN across equipment that connects broadband users and carries traffic over fiber, selling to network operators in all three areas: fixed access, subscriber equipment and optical transport. Watch Nokia’s fixed-access and optical-transport business within Network Infrastructure for the investment demand that overlaps with ADTRAN.

  • Ribbon Communications competes with ADTRAN for carrier deployments through its IP Optical Networks business, selling equipment that routes traffic and carries it over fiber against ADTRAN’s optical transport and aggregation offerings. Watch Ribbon’s effort to expand North American routing and optical-networking sales through its existing customer base.

  • Harmonic competes with ADTRAN for broadband operators’ cable and fiber network upgrades, selling access platforms that connect users to the network. Watch its continuing Broadband business and cOS platform’s adoption for multi-gigabit upgrades, rather than its Video business, which is reported as discontinued operations.

  • Cisco competes with ADTRAN in optical networking and sells routers and switches to overlapping network customers. Watch Cisco’s networking products rather than its security or collaboration businesses for the spending on network modernization that is relevant to ADTRAN.

  • Clearfield and ADTRAN depend on broadband fiber builds: providers buy Clearfield’s products to protect, organize and deliver fiber, alongside the access and subscriber equipment ADTRAN sells. Watch Clearfield’s business with North American broadband providers for construction demand tied to ADTRAN’s fiber equipment.

  • Lumentum and ADTRAN serve the same optical-network capacity upgrades at different levels: customers buy Lumentum’s laser components, wavelength-management systems and optical modules, while network operators buy ADTRAN’s optical transport platforms. Watch Lumentum’s network optical products for demand in the networks ADTRAN serves; this tie does not establish a direct supply relationship.

  • Coherent and ADTRAN both depend on investment in optical-network capacity: customers buy Coherent’s communications optical components and modules, while network operators buy ADTRAN’s optical transport systems and modules. Watch communications demand within Coherent’s Datacenter & Communications business, rather than treating all its datacenter and industrial sales as a signal for ADTRAN.
