Company

Company overview

Ribbon Communications helps telecom operators and enterprises modernize voice communications and the networks that carry their data. Its larger business, Cloud and Edge, supplies software and equipment that connect and protect internet-based calls and support voice and collaboration services across customer premises and cloud environments. These include session border controllers, which manage calls crossing between networks. Customers also pay Ribbon to design and install networks and maintain and support its products; these services account for a substantial part of revenue.

Its second business, IP Optical Networks, supplies equipment and software that route data and transport it over fiber, including Apollo optical transport and Neptune switching and routing products. Customers use them to connect mobile networks, data centers and critical infrastructure. Ribbon generally sells directly to telecom operators, while enterprise purchases mostly go through resellers and other channel partners.

The business depends on customers’ network spending and repeat orders from major accounts. Verizon supplies a significant share of revenue, and the five largest customers together account for a substantial portion. Ribbon has no internal manufacturing and relies on a small group of large contract manufacturers to assemble products and fulfill orders. Export controls restrict distribution of its encryption products, and sanctions prohibit hardware sales and certain services to Russia. India requires local manufacturing for certain products; Ribbon is developing relocation plans to meet those requirements.

  • AudioCodes competes with Ribbon for enterprise and service-provider spending on products that connect voice networks, including session border controllers and voice gateways. Watch its enterprise voice-networking business, where the two suppliers directly overlap.

  • Ciena competes with Ribbon for network operators’ purchases of systems that carry traffic over optical networks and route and switch data. Its Optical Networking and Routing and Switching businesses are the parts to watch for competition with Ribbon’s IP Optical Networks segment.

  • ADTRAN competes with Ribbon for network operators’ spending on optical transport and equipment connecting data centers. Watch its Optical Networking Solutions revenue rather than treating its broadband-access business as the same competitive exposure.

  • Nokia challenges Ribbon in both optical transport and IP networking, and in products that modernize voice networks and control voice connections, including session border controllers. Its sales of optical, routing and switching equipment to telecommunications providers are a concrete area to watch for overlap with Ribbon.

  • Ribbon depends on Verizon’s software purchases across its communications businesses: Verizon accounted for 17% of Ribbon’s 2025 revenue, up from 11% in 2023. Watch those purchases across Verizon’s divisions serving large enterprises, small and medium-sized businesses and consumers, rather than its overall communications revenue alone.

  • Cisco competes for Ribbon’s customers with products that control voice connections, route data, carry traffic over optical networks and automate network operations. Watch its routing and network-automation offerings for direct overlap with Ribbon, rather than treating all of Cisco’s software and hardware as competing products.

  • Ericsson competes with Ribbon for service providers’ purchases of products that modernize voice networks, control voice connections through session border controllers and automate network operations. Its voice-network and automation offerings are the relevant competition for Ribbon’s Cloud and Edge business.

  • Oracle competes with Ribbon for enterprise and service-provider purchases of products that connect voice networks, including session border controllers and voice gateways. Those voice-connectivity products, rather than Oracle’s broader cloud and software business, are the direct competitive overlap.

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

Ribbon sells voice and IP networking products and related services to service providers and enterprises, so the Fed’s decision on short-term borrowing costs matters because higher rates can make customers’ network projects harder to finance and reduce what they buy.
