Company

Company overview

Zoom Communications helps businesses and other organizations hold video meetings, collaborate, and communicate with customers. Zoom Workplace bundles communication and collaboration tools; Zoom Phone provides a cloud-based business phone service, while Zoom Contact Center supports customer-facing communications. Customers pay subscription fees for access, rather than buying the software outright.

Most revenue comes from Enterprise customers served by Zoom’s sales team, resellers, or strategic partners. The rest comes from customers subscribing directly through its website, ranging from individuals to small and medium-sized businesses. The business depends on customers renewing subscriptions and buying additional products or licenses, alongside attracting new subscribers and converting free users to paid plans. Free usage alone does not generate subscription revenue, and bundled or free alternatives such as Microsoft Teams and Google Meet compete for customers.

Reliable service depends on Zoom’s data centers, outside cloud providers, and users’ internet access. Privacy and cross-border data-transfer rules restrict how it can process and move customer information, while export controls and sanctions limit which customers and markets it can serve.

  • Microsoft competes for Zoom’s business subscribers by bundling meetings, messaging and collaboration in Teams against Zoom Workplace. Watch Teams’ bundled offerings: Zoom says competition from bundles and lower-priced alternatives has sometimes pushed it to cut prices or offer discounts.

  • RINGCENTRAL, INC. competes for the business subscriptions behind Zoom Phone, Zoom Workplace and Zoom Contact Center by selling cloud communications and contact-center services. Its subscription revenue is the line to watch for competition across those services.

  • FIVE9, INC. competes directly for Zoom Contact Center’s business customers, selling cloud software that handles customer interactions across calls, chat and other channels. Watch its AI customer-service offerings, including AI Agents and Agent Assist, for the alternatives facing Zoom’s contact-center service.

  • Cisco’s Webex competes with Zoom for businesses paying for meeting and collaboration services. Watch Cisco’s collaboration software, sold through licenses and subscriptions, rather than its broader networking business when assessing this rivalry.

  • Alphabet competes for Zoom’s business meeting and collaboration customers through Google Meet bundled into a software suite. Watch the Meet bundle rather than Alphabet’s advertising revenue for the competitive pressure on Zoom’s paid services.

  • Sangoma Technologies Corporation sells businesses cloud communications, contact centers and video meetings that they can buy instead of Zoom’s corresponding services. Watch its communications contracts with small businesses through large enterprises for competition across Zoom’s phone, meeting and contact-center offerings.

  • Salesforce’s Slack competes with Zoom Workplace for business users who need messaging and collaboration tools.

  • Zoom depends on Amazon’s AWS cloud infrastructure for certain critical business functions. Watch AWS outages and capacity constraints: disruptions can interrupt Zoom’s services and lead to customer credits or subscription cancellations.

  • Oracle supplies cloud services that Zoom uses for certain critical business functions, making service reliability relevant to Zoom’s subscription business. Oracle Cloud disruptions can cause Zoom outages or delays, putting customer retention and subscription revenue at risk.
