Company

Company overview

Yunji buys goods such as healthcare, beauty and food products and sells them to members and non-members through its apps and mini program. These merchandise sales provide most of its revenue. It also sells private-label products through its own platform and external channels. A smaller business lets third-party merchants sell and fulfill orders on its platform, paying Yunji a commission on each sale.

Members bring shoppers to Yunji by recommending products and sharing purchase links through networks including WeChat, QQ and Weibo. A substantial portion of user traffic comes from these recommendations, so sales depend on members staying active and continuing to buy and refer others. Successful referrals earn coupons for future purchases, not cash. Private-label sales also depend on outside manufacturers, with Suye and Qing Zi Yang accounting for a substantial portion of that business’s sales value.

China’s prohibition on pyramid selling constrains how Yunji can organize member promotion and rewards; it changed its earlier practices after a regulatory violation. Foreign-ownership restrictions also mean it runs internet-content activities through a Chinese entity controlled by contracts rather than equity ownership. Its ability to direct those activities and receive their economic benefits depends on those contracts remaining enforceable.

Yunji depends on Chinese consumers’ confidence and repeat purchases of curated and private-label goods, with WeChat and QQ important channels for member referrals.

  • JD.com competes with Yunji for Chinese online shoppers: both buy general merchandise from suppliers to resell to consumers and let third-party merchants sell on their platforms in return for sales commissions. JD.com’s expanding marketplace assortment is worth watching for the competing choices it gives those shoppers.
