Company

Company overview

WiMi Hologram Cloud helps advertisers place three-dimensional objects into films and shows on online streaming platforms in China. Advertisers and agencies choose audiences and budgets and typically supply the 3D models; WiMi’s software finds suitable spaces in the videos and inserts the objects automatically. The company shares advertising revenue with the channel providers that carry the ads. Its business now earns its revenue from augmented-reality (AR) advertising, rather than the entertainment software and semiconductor businesses that previously contributed revenue.

Most revenue comes from mainland China, with Hong Kong also contributing. A small group of customers supplies a substantial share of revenue. The business depends on advertisers allocating budgets to AR placements instead of established advertising channels, and on access to the channels that display its ads.

Chinese foreign-ownership rules restrict certain internet content and online culture activities. WiMi conducts those activities through a variable interest entity, which it controls through contracts rather than equity ownership. Its ability to continue those operations depends on the legality and enforceability of those arrangements and on maintaining required operating licenses.

  • WiMi controls MicroAlgo through 73.2% of its voting power and has funded it with loans convertible into shares, tying WiMi directly to its ownership and financing. MicroAlgo sells customized computing and data-processing algorithms to businesses; watch its financing activity and its business with internet-advertising and intelligent-chip customers.

  • Cheetah Mobile competes with WiMi for advertisers’ online budgets: it displays ads in software and apps, while WiMi inserts 3D objects into films and shows on Chinese streaming platforms, with both charging for ad views.
