Company overview

Vishay Precision Group supplies components and equipment that help customers measure force, weight and other physical conditions precisely. Sensors and weighing products together account for most revenue: these include precision resistors, strain gages that detect deformation, and VPG Transducers load cells that measure force or weight. It also sells specialized systems for metals production, materials development and safety testing, including KELK equipment used in steel and aluminum rolling mills.

Equipment manufacturers often pay VPG to supply parts engineered to their specifications. Once a part passes testing and becomes part of a customer's product design, production can bring repeat orders, with limited scope to substitute another supplier's part. Winning that place can require lengthy development and customer testing before meaningful revenue arrives. Industrial customers also buy complete measurement systems for their operations.

The business depends mainly on industrial demand rather than any one customer; its customer base is diversified. Some highly specialized sensor materials come from a single supplier. Certain military, aerospace and force-sensing products require qualifications or approvals, and onboard weighing systems must meet approved standards to be used for commercial transactions based on weight.

Beyond the listed electronic-component peers, watch HBK: it competes with VPG in strain gages and load cells, where industrial equipment makers’ orders and precision-weighing demand matter.

  • Vishay Intertechnology competes with VPG to have equipment makers choose its resistors for their products rather than VPG’s precision foil resistors. Watch its resistor design wins: VPG’s parts typically take 12–24 months to enter a customer’s design, after which production can bring repeat orders with little opportunity to switch suppliers.

  • Sensata and VPG both sell sensors built into equipment makers’ products to turn physical inputs into electronic signals, so customer production volumes and more sensing functions matter to both. Sensata’s automotive sensor business offers a view of that demand, though its customers include vehicle makers and their direct suppliers rather than VPG’s broader market mix.

  • Littelfuse and VPG both depend on industrial and transportation equipment makers buying sensing products designed into their equipment, including agricultural and construction machinery. Watch Littelfuse’s transportation business with these customers for clues to demand for VPG’s load cells and force-measurement products.

  • Knowles and VPG serve overlapping industrial, medical and defense equipment makers, selling customized capacitors and radio-frequency components versus precision resistors and sensors. Knowles’s PD business is the part to watch for demand for specialized components in those markets, rather than its hearing-health and specialty-audio products.

    Industrial Production MoM (Oct)

Industrial production tracks how much factories, mines and utilities produce; stronger output can support orders for VPG’s sensors, weighing equipment and specialized measurement systems, while weaker output can reduce what industrial customers buy.
