Company

Company overview

Viking Holdings serves mainly affluent, older English-speaking travelers, with most guests coming from North America. Its itineraries focus on Europe and the Mediterranean. Viking River and Viking Ocean generate most revenue; expedition cruises and other operations are smaller. Cruise fares include a shore excursion at every port, meals and selected drinks and services. Optional excursions and pre- or post-cruise stays bring in additional revenue.

Guests book directly with Viking or through travel agents, which remain a material sales channel. Guests generally pay well before departure, and Viking uses cash from future cruise bookings to fund day-to-day operations. Credit-card processors can withhold some of those funds or require reserves, limiting access to that cash.

The business depends on filling ships and securing access to ports and navigable waterways. Demand peaks during Northern Hemisphere summer, and most river ships leave service during winter. Viking Mississippi also depends on a charter arrangement with an affiliate of Edison Chouest Offshore: U.S. law restricts domestic passenger service to U.S.-built, U.S.-documented, U.S.-crewed and U.S.-owned vessels, so continued compliance is necessary to operate those itineraries.

  • Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings competes for Viking Holdings’ upscale, destination-focused ocean cruise guests through Oceania and Regent Seven Seas. Watch those brands’ fares and included excursions and amenities: they shape the alternatives passengers can buy to Viking’s all-inclusive voyages.

  • Royal Caribbean Group’s Silversea competes with Viking Holdings for passengers buying luxury ocean and expedition cruises, using smaller ships, high service standards and remote itineraries. Silversea’s remote-destination offerings are the part of Royal Caribbean’s cruise business to watch for alternatives to Viking’s voyages.

  • Carnival’s premium and luxury cruises compete with Viking Holdings for guests paying for higher service and destination-rich ocean vacations. Watch those offerings rather than Carnival’s broad-market cruises, especially their varied itineraries and small-ship access to ports larger ships cannot reach.

  • Lindblad Expeditions Holdings Inc. competes with Viking Expedition for travelers paying for immersive nature, culture and expert-led ship expeditions. Watch whether Lindblad maintains premium pricing with little discounting: that offers a read on travelers’ willingness to pay for this kind of exploration.

  • OneSpaWorld Holdings Limited shares Viking Holdings’ exposure to cruise passenger demand, fleet growth and guests’ discretionary spending, but earns its money from onboard wellness services rather than voyages. Guests pay through the cruise line, which keeps a share; watch OneSpaWorld’s onboard service revenue for a read on passengers’ appetite for extras alongside Viking’s optional excursions, bar and shop sales.
