Company

Company overview

VinFast Auto makes electric cars for individual drivers and business customers, including taxi and rental operators. Models such as the VF 5, VF 6 and Limo Green generate vehicle-sales revenue, with most vehicle sales going through third-party dealers. It also makes electric scooters and buses, but cars account for most of the business.

Vietnam supplies the great majority of revenue despite VinFast’s overseas expansion. GSM, an affiliated Vietnamese ride-hailing company, buys vehicles and accounts for a considerable share of EV sales revenue. The business therefore depends partly on continued orders from affiliates. Customers’ willingness to buy also depends on charging access; VinFast works with affiliate V-Green and other charging operators to provide it.

VinFast is still expanding production and sales, and its operations consume cash. It relies on outside financing and financial support from Vingroup and founder Pham Nhat Vuong to fund operations and expansion; that support is not assured. Before delivering vehicles in each market, it must meet local safety and other standards and complete required testing and certification.

VinFast’s results depend chiefly on Vietnam’s vehicle demand, financial support from Vingroup and its founder, and fleet relationships with GSM and its regional affiliates.

  • Toyota competes directly with VinFast to sell mainstream passenger cars to individual and fleet buyers in Vietnam.

  • Honda challenges VinFast in Vietnam on two fronts: selling passenger cars to car buyers and conventional motorcycles to riders who might instead choose VinFast’s electric scooters.

  • Tesla competes with VinFast for electric-SUV buyers in overseas markets; its vehicle pricing is a pressure point for VinFast’s own prices and customer incentives.

  • XPeng competes with VinFast for electric passenger-car buyers as both expand across Asia and Europe. Watch XPeng’s overseas expansion in those regions, rather than treating its mainly China-based sales as a direct read on VinFast’s demand.

  • NIO competes with VinFast for passenger-EV buyers in Southeast Asia and Europe, with its family-focused ONVO and small-car FIREFLY brands overlapping VinFast’s range. Those brands’ expansion in these markets is the part to watch for competitive pressure on VinFast.

  • Ford competes with VinFast to sell SUVs to buyers in Vietnam and electric SUVs to buyers in overseas markets.

  • Rivian competes with VinFast’s larger electric SUVs for U.S. buyers, selling its vehicles directly to customers. Its R1S SUV is the product to watch for this rivalry, rather than its pickups or commercial vans.

  • Polestar competes with VinFast to sell electric cars to buyers in Europe and North America, while both expand sales through dealers.

  • VinFast works with Aptiv, which sells vehicle hardware and software to automakers, on certain components that power its vehicles and their batteries. For VinFast holders, the relevant issue is whether needed components arrive on time at acceptable prices, quality and volumes.
