Company

Company overview

Upwork Inc. runs the Upwork Marketplace, where businesses find independent professionals and agencies, contract for work, and manage payments. Clients range from entrepreneurs and small businesses to large enterprises. Most revenue comes from this marketplace: Upwork charges professionals and agencies a share of their client billings and charges clients a fee based on payments to talent. Advertising products and paid memberships bring in additional revenue.

Its wholly owned subsidiary Lifted serves enterprises that need help sourcing, contracting, managing, and paying contingent workers, charging subscriptions and service fees. Under Lifted Managed Services, clients instead pay Lifted to deliver a project or defined work outcome. Lifted engages the workers directly and takes responsibility for their work.

The main fee business depends on clients continuing to buy work and both sides keeping transactions on Upwork rather than arranging payment outside it. Upwork also relies on banks and payment partners to move funds. Its escrow operations are licensed and regulated; it holds customer money in trust and must use its own cash to cover temporary trust shortfalls while client payments are in transit.
