Tesla rebounds as auto peers fall, but recent losses linger
Tesla rose 3.8% and finished near its session high while all eight auto peers in the comparison group declined. The rebound broke a five-session losing streak, though it recovered only part of the recent pullback.
Tesla stood out from a falling auto group on Monday, gaining 3.8% and closing near the session high. That move was ordinary for Tesla itself; the contrast with peers was more notable. All eight companies in the comparison group—including Rivian, XPeng, Nio, GM and Ford—fell, with a median decline of 1.1%. Tesla’s 4.9-percentage-point lead over that median exceeded the differences among the peers, showing a clear preference for Tesla in the day’s trading.
The rebound interrupted sustained selling rather than erasing it. Tesla had declined in each of the previous five sessions and remained down 2.6% over the latest five trading days, versus a 1.5% decline for the S&P 500. Monday’s volume of 38.6 million shares was roughly normal, following roughly twice-normal volume during Friday’s 2.1% drop.
Separately, the Roadster remains a business development to assess. A report published before the open examined differences between the version unveiled in 2017 and the one shown again last Thursday. [1] In a report published during Monday’s session, Karl Brauer described the reveal as stunning but raised questions about logistics, pricing and profit potential. [2] Those issues matter because an impressive demonstration still needs a workable path to profitable vehicle sales. Tesla is scheduled to report earnings after Wednesday’s close, bringing the company’s financial performance back into focus. [2]
