TMC the metals company Inc. is a development-stage company, not a commercial metal producer, and has not yet generated operating revenue. It plans to collect metal-bearing nodules from the seabed in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, bring them ashore, and process them into nickel, copper, cobalt and manganese products. Its intended markets include battery materials and manganese alloys used in steelmaking.
Metal buyers would provide the eventual sales revenue. Glencore International AG has purchase rights covering a substantial portion of nickel and copper produced from NORI-area nodules at a processing plant owned or controlled by TMC’s subsidiary. The development plan assumes initial processing at PAMCO facilities in Japan. Offshore collection depends heavily on Allseas, which demonstrated a test collection system; commercial-scale operation and definitive commercial agreements remain unresolved.
TMC is prioritizing U.S. permits through NOAA, which has not issued it a commercial recovery permit. Its subsidiaries’ International Seabed Authority exploration rights do not authorize commercial collection, which requires separate ISA approval. A U.S. permit would not be formally recognized by the ISA or countries party to UNCLOS. Reaching metal sales also requires additional financing and proving that collection, transport and processing can work at commercial scale.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
TMC has yet to generate operating revenue, and its outlook hinges on recovery permits, metal prices and commercialization with nodule-collection partner Allseas, processing partner PAMCO and nickel-and-copper buyer Glencore.
NexMetals Mining Corp. shares TMC’s exposure to copper, nickel and cobalt prices, but develops deposits in Botswana rather than seafloor resources. Neither has earned operating revenue; NexMetals’ work to establish whether its deposits can be mined economically offers a comparison for TMC’s own development hurdles.
American Battery Technology Company recovers nickel, cobalt and manganese from batteries, giving it exposure to the same metals TMC plans to extract from seafloor nodules. Watch its progress in turning recovered battery powders into products intended to meet battery-grade specifications, rather than simply selling those powders to contracted buyers.
Freeport-McMoRan’s copper sales expose it to the same price that helps determine whether TMC’s planned nodule production can be profitable. Copper supplied 75% of Freeport’s consolidated revenue in 2025, making that revenue line the clearest comparison for TMC’s copper exposure.
Hudbay Minerals Inc. produces mainly copper, so copper prices connect its operating results with the economics of TMC’s planned metal production. Its copper operations in Peru and Canada offer an operating comparison, though meaningful gold production means its overall results are not a pure copper signal.
Rio Tinto’s substantial copper business shares a metal-price exposure with TMC’s proposed nodule project. Watch its copper-segment earnings rather than group results, which also include aluminium, lithium and a larger iron-ore earnings contribution.
Freeport-McMoran Inc. earningsFCX
Freeport-McMoRan's copper-heavy report shows how copper prices feed an operating miner's sales, giving TMC a price reference for its planned copper output.
Read Freeport-McMoRan's realized copper price alongside its copper sales. Strong prices and sales would point to a more supportive copper-price backdrop for TMC's planned output; weaker prices would reduce that support for potential revenue. Freeport-McMoRan's costs and mines differ from TMC's, so this is a copper-price signal, not a forecast of TMC's profit.
American Battery Technology Company earningsABAT
American Battery Technology Company's report will show whether it can turn recovered metal powders into battery-grade products, an alternative supply route for metals TMC plans to sell.
Look for progress in turning recovered powders into products that meet battery specifications, and whether the company still mainly sells powders to contracted buyers. Progress in processing and product sales would show recycled metals becoming a more finished source of nickel, cobalt and other metals that could compete with TMC's planned output; continued powder sales would show that step remains a hurdle. This indicates how mature the competing supply route is, not whether battery customers will accept TMC's nodule-derived metals.

TMC has no operating revenue yet, so this report will show whether its cash and financing can keep funding nodule development.
Read cash used in operations alongside cash on hand and any new financing. Lower cash use, ample remaining cash or new funds would leave TMC more room to advance nodule collection and processing; faster cash use without new financing would bring fundraising forward and could force delays or further cuts. TMC has not started selling products, so these figures show its funding capacity, not whether the project is commercially viable.
