Company

Company overview

Surrozen is developing medicines intended to help repair eye tissue by influencing Wnt signaling, a pathway involved in tissue repair and regeneration. Its SWAP platform designs antibodies to activate that pathway, and its lead candidates, SZN-8141 and SZN-8143, target retinal diseases. These are development programs, not products for sale; Surrozen has generated no product-sales revenue.

Its main ongoing commercial partnership is with Boehringer Ingelheim, which licensed SZN-413 and related antibodies. Boehringer Ingelheim funds and controls further development, manufacturing, regulatory approvals and commercialization. Surrozen has received upfront and milestone payments and could earn further payments as the program progresses, plus royalties if licensed products reach the market. This income therefore depends heavily on Boehringer Ingelheim advancing the program. The agreement temporarily restricts Surrozen from developing or commercializing certain Fzd4-targeting antibodies for eye diseases, although it owns other ophthalmology candidates outside the agreement’s scope.

Surrozen also previously earned fees for antibody-discovery work for TCGFB, but that agreement ended in November 2025. It has financed operations mainly through equity sales and collaboration payments and needs additional funding to continue development. Selling its own medicines would require successful development and regulatory approval.

Surrozen hinges on retinal-program progress and financing, including milestone payments from privately held partner Boehringer Ingelheim, while Roche is an established retinal rival also developing a competing Wnt approach.

  • Merck directly challenges Surrozen with MK-3000, an antibody designed to activate Wnt signaling in retinal disease. Watch its Phase 2/3 trial in previously untreated diabetic macular edema and neovascular age-related macular degeneration: it tests the same broad treatment approach Surrozen is developing, not yet selling.

  • Regeneron's EYLEA medicines already treat retinal patients whom Surrozen hopes to reach with its Wnt-modulating antibodies, making accepted treatments a hurdle to switching. Watch EYLEA and EYLEA HD sales for evidence of demand for those established alternatives.

  • REGENXBIO competes for the retinal-treatment markets Surrozen hopes to enter through sura-vec, a gene therapy being developed with AbbVie for wet AMD and diabetic retinopathy. It also receives funding by licensing its gene-delivery technology to drug developers; for Surrozen, the relevant news is sura-vec's development progress.

  • Ocugen's gene therapies aim to restore retinal function, offering a competing route to the future treatment use Surrozen seeks for its retinal-repair antibodies. Like Surrozen's candidates, these are not products generating sales; watch whether Ocugen's approach can address genetically diverse inherited and other degenerative retinal diseases.

  • AbbVie competes with Surrozen's retinal programs by co-developing REGENXBIO's sura-vec for wet AMD and diabetic retinopathy. AbbVie already sells medicines, but the development news most relevant to Surrozen is this retinal gene therapy rather than its overall drug sales.

  • Novartis already markets retinal medicines accepted by physicians, patients and third-party payors, making it harder for Surrozen's experimental antibodies to win users. Watch acceptance of those established retinal treatments: Surrozen must persuade both patients and those paying for care to switch.
