The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company supplies products for growing lawns and plants and controlling weeds and pests, mainly in North America. Consumer lawn and garden products account for most revenue, with soils, growing media, mulch and lawn care carrying the largest share. Brands include Scotts, Miracle-Gro, Ortho and Tomcat. Retailers buy these products to resell to consumers; The Home Depot and Lowe’s together supply a majority of the company’s sales, without long-term sales commitments.
This business depends heavily on the spring gardening season and retailers’ orders as consumers begin buying. Weather affects demand, and the company builds inventory ahead of the season. Its U.S. pesticide products generally need federal and state registrations, while some Canadian provinces substantially restrict sales of certain consumer pesticides.
Scotts Miracle-Gro also earns a commission from Monsanto for exclusively marketing and distributing certain consumer Roundup products in the United States and specified other countries. This agreement is an important earnings source, and Monsanto can terminate it under specified conditions.
Its smaller Hawthorne business sells nutrients, lighting and other supplies for indoor and soil-free gardening under brands such as General Hydroponics and Gavita, serving distributors, retailers and growers. Demand partly depends on cannabis cultivation, which faces differing state rules and remains prohibited under U.S. federal law.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Scotts Miracle-Gro depends on seasonal lawn and garden demand, purchases by Lowe’s—18% of fiscal 2025 net sales—and its agreement with Monsanto to market consumer Roundup products.
Central Garden & Pet competes with Scotts Miracle-Gro for lawn and garden buyers’ spending on grass seed, fertilizers and pesticides, so both face the same seasonal demand. Watch Central’s Garden business rather than its pet products for clues to demand for these lawn-care supplies.
Home Depot buys Scotts Miracle-Gro’s lawn and garden products to resell to shoppers and accounted for 34% of Scotts’ fiscal 2025 net sales, making Scotts heavily dependent on its orders. Watch changes in Home Depot’s orders and the Scotts products it stocks: Scotts has no long-term sales agreement assuring future purchases.
Spectrum Brands Holdings’ Home and Garden business competes with Scotts Miracle-Gro’s Ortho and other pest-control products for retail buyers’ spending. Watch its Home and Garden sales and relationships with retailers and distributors for signs of competitive pressure on Scotts’ pest-control business.
Hydrofarm Holdings Group competes with Scotts Miracle-Gro’s Hawthorne business in nutrients, growing media, lighting and equipment for indoor and water-based growing, selling through retailers and other wholesale customers mainly in the U.S. and Canada. Watch demand for its replenishable growing media and nutrients for clues to growers’ spending, as cannabis oversupply and lower wholesale prices weighed on Hawthorne’s sales volume in fiscal 2025.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
Scotts Miracle-Gro’s Fed-rate exposure runs through its variable-rate credit-agreement debt: the decision tracks the policy rate, which influences what the company pays to borrow and service that debt.

If it comes in above expectations
If the policy rate is higher than expected, Scotts Miracle-Gro may pay more interest on debt that reprices, leaving less cash for operations and other needs.

The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company earningsThis company
Scotts Miracle-Gro earns mainly by selling lawn and garden products to retailers, and this report will show whether retailer demand is turning into profitable shipments.
Read sales alongside gross margin, the share of sales left after product costs. Stronger sales with a steady margin would show that retailer demand and product mix are supporting profitable shipments. Weaker sales or a falling margin would show that orders, mix, or costs are undermining the business.
Hydrofarm Holdings Group, Inc. earningsHYFM
Hydrofarm Holdings Group sells nutrients and growing media for indoor cultivation, so its report will show whether growers are still buying these repeat-use supplies—a demand clue for Scotts Miracle-Gro’s Hawthorne business.
Look at Hydrofarm’s sales of nutrients and growing media. Improvement would suggest growers are replenishing routine supplies and demand pressure on Hawthorne may be easing. Continued weakness would indicate that cannabis oversupply and low wholesale prices are still curbing growers’ purchases, a headwind for Hawthorne’s sales volume too.
Spectrum Brands Holdings, Inc. earningsSPB
Spectrum Brands’ Home and Garden business sells pest-control and garden products, so its report will show how retail demand for those goods is faring against Scotts Miracle-Gro’s Ortho products.
Focus on Spectrum Brands’ Home and Garden sales, not the company’s overall results. Growth there would show that retailers are still spending on pest-control and garden goods; if Scotts’ related products lag, competition may be intensifying. A decline could signal softer category demand, not necessarily gains for Scotts.
Home Depot, Inc. earningsHD
Home Depot is Scotts Miracle-Gro’s largest customer and resells its lawn and garden products; Home Depot’s sales and stocking will show whether the base for this major buyer’s orders is holding up.
Look at Home Depot’s home-and-garden sales and whether it continues to stock Scotts products. Steady sales and shelf space would support ongoing sales and replenishment by this major customer; weaker sales or less stocking could pressure Scotts’ orders. Because no long-term sales agreement assures future purchases, Scotts’ own shipments will show whether that demand carries through.
Central Garden and Pet Co earningsCENT
Central Garden and Pet’s Garden business sells grass seed, fertilizer, and pesticides, so its report will show seasonal demand for lawn-care supplies that compete with Scotts Miracle-Gro’s products.
Look at Central Garden and Pet’s Garden sales, not its pet business. Stronger Garden sales would show support for seasonal demand for grass seed, fertilizer, and pesticides; weaker sales would suggest shoppers are pulling back from these supplies, which could also pressure Scotts’ competing products.
