Company

Company overview

SELLAS Life Sciences Group is a late-stage clinical biopharmaceutical company. Its lead candidate, GPS, aims to stimulate the immune system against WT1, a protein found in many cancers. It licensed GPS from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Its other candidate, SLS009 (tambiciclib), inhibits CDK9 and is licensed from GenFleet for development and commercialization outside Greater China. Neither candidate has regulatory approval, and SELLAS has no product-sales revenue.

Its only revenue to date has come from 3D Medicines, which holds rights to develop and commercialize GPS and GPS+ in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan; SELLAS retains rights elsewhere. The agreement has paid upfront and milestone fees and provides for further milestone payments and royalties if products are sold. Those payments depend on the partner’s progress, and SELLAS and 3D Medicines are in arbitration over milestone payments and development obligations.

SELLAS has funded substantially all operations through equity and convertible-note financing. Completing development requires additional capital, successful clinical trials and regulatory approval before drugs can be sold. It also relies on outside manufacturers: Polypeptide Group is the sole manufacturer of GPS’s drug-substance peptides, and PCI Pharma Services is the sole manufacturer of the finished GPS candidate. SELLAS has no current contracts for commercial supplies.

SELLAS's prospects hinge on clinical success for GPS and SLS009, with GenFleet licensing SLS009 to SELLAS and 3D Medicines controlling GPS development and commercialization in Greater China.

  • Prelude Therapeutics Incorporated's PRT2527 competes with SELLAS's SLS009: both are experimental cancer drugs designed to selectively block CDK9. PRT2527's clinical results help investors judge how SLS009 stands apart from another drug targeting the same protein.

  • Syndax Pharmaceuticals, Inc. already sells Revuforj (revumenib) for genetically defined acute leukemias, competing in the acute myeloid leukemia (AML) market SELLAS's experimental therapies target. Watch Revuforj's U.S. sales as a measure of an established rival's commercial progress, rather than evidence that SELLAS's drugs will succeed clinically.

  • Rigel Pharmaceuticals Inc. (New) sells REZLIDHIA for adults with relapsed or refractory AML carrying a susceptible IDH1 mutation, giving SELLAS an established rival in the leukemia market it targets. REZLIDHIA sales through U.S. wholesalers and specialty pharmacies are the relevant business to watch, rather than Rigel's other medicines.

  • Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. sells Vidaza and Onureg for AML, giving patients established treatment alternatives that SELLAS's experimental leukemia drugs must compete against.

SELLAS has no sales from approved products, so this report will show whether its cash can keep GPS and SLS009 moving or whether operating costs are consuming the funds needed to advance them.
