Company

Company overview

Silicon Motion supplies chips and firmware that manage NAND flash memory inside storage devices. Customers include NAND flash manufacturers, storage-module makers and equipment manufacturers, which buy its products through purchase orders. Controllers for PC solid-state drives and embedded smartphone storage account for most revenue; the company markets these under the SMI brand. It also sells a smaller line of complete storage products that combine its controllers with NAND memory, including Ferri-branded products for industrial applications.

The company designs its chips but outsources production, relying mainly on TSMC and, to a lesser extent, SMIC for fabrication, and other contractors for assembly and testing. A small group of customers supplies most revenue, with PHISEMI the largest and Kioxia, AFASTOR and Micron also major buyers. Orders can be changed or delayed at short notice rather than providing firm long-term demand.

The business depends on demand for PCs and smartphones, NAND availability and prices, and customers continuing to buy outside controllers rather than developing their own. Silicon Motion must also update its designs as memory technology changes. Export controls and sanctions can restrict sales to covered customers or require the company to suspend them.

The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.

Beyond this list, watch Silicon Motion’s competition with Phison and orders from PHISEMI, Kioxia and AFASTOR, which together accounted for 48% of its 2025 sales.

  • Micron buys the chips that manage flash memory in its storage products from Silicon Motion, contributing 10% of Silicon Motion’s 2025 sales. Watch Micron’s NAND storage business for clues to demand for those controllers, rather than treating all its memory sales as equally relevant.

  • SK hynix buys Silicon Motion’s flash-memory controllers for its storage business, accounting for 12% of Silicon Motion’s sales in 2023 but less than 10% in each of 2024 and 2025. Its NAND and SSD sales for mobile devices, PCs and servers are the business to watch for this relationship, not its HBM business.

  • Demand for Sandisk’s SSDs and embedded flash storage also drives the market for Silicon Motion’s chips that manage NAND memory. Watch Sandisk’s sales of SSDs and embedded storage to PC and mobile-device makers and channel customers for a read on that shared demand.

  • Marvell competes with Silicon Motion to sell chips that control storage devices to storage and data-infrastructure customers. Its storage-controller products are the relevant overlap; Marvell also sells computing, networking and interconnect chips, so its overall data-center revenue is a broader measure.

  • Microchip competes with Silicon Motion in chips that control storage, but those products are only part of its broader business supplying embedded-control chips to equipment makers. Watch its data-center storage-controller products for competitive developments, rather than its wider automotive and industrial chip business.

  • Silicon Motion relies on TSMC to manufacture its chip designs rather than making the chips itself; TSMC is one of its primary paid manufacturing suppliers, or foundries. Watch available manufacturing capacity: when inventory is insufficient, Silicon Motion’s order-to-shipment time can stretch from about three months to as much as six when independent foundries are fully utilized.

  • MaxLinear’s abandoned purchase of Silicon Motion links them through pending arbitration over a US$160 million termination fee and additional damages, not competing products; MaxLinear sells communications chips to equipment makers. Watch the final award and whether any payment can be collected, since Silicon Motion says collection is not assured and MaxLinear warns payments could exceed its cash resources.
