Company overview

Septerna is a clinical-stage biotechnology company using its Native Complex Platform to discover and improve potential oral medicines. These candidates target receptors that transmit signals in cells, known as G-protein-coupled receptors, or GPCRs. It develops its own pipeline alongside programs with pharmaceutical partners.

Most revenue comes from its exclusive metabolic-disease collaboration with Novo Nordisk. Novo paid an upfront fee for the collaboration and license; Septerna can earn further payments as programs reach agreed milestones and royalties if resulting medicines are sold. Earlier research work for Vertex also generated revenue, but that agreement has expired.

Septerna has no approved medicines and has never earned revenue from product sales. Its collaboration income depends heavily on Novo continuing the work and committing resources. Future medicine sales require successful clinical development and regulatory approval; Septerna cannot market its candidates in the United States without FDA approval.

Beyond its reliance on clinical success and the Novo Nordisk collaboration, Septerna faces competition in GPCR drug discovery from Nxera Pharma and privately held Confo Therapeutics.

  • Septerna depends on Novo Nordisk, which licenses its oral metabolic-disease programs and pays for collaborative research; further milestone payments and sales royalties depend on success. Watch progress on their oral GIP receptor agonist, Septerna's most advanced preclinical metabolic program.

  • Structure Therapeutics Inc. competes with Septerna in discovering oral small-molecule drugs that act on cell receptors called GPCRs, including treatments for metabolic diseases. Its progress in oral metabolic treatments helps show the competition facing Septerna's programs with Novo Nordisk.

  • Ascendis Pharma A/S already sells YORVIPATH for hypoparathyroidism, putting an established treatment in the market Septerna's oral PTH1R agonist program aims to enter.

  • Viridian Therapeutics, Inc. develops antibodies for thyroid eye disease and names Septerna's earlier-stage therapies as potential competitors. Progress toward approval for veligrotug and elegrobart would help define the treatment competition facing Septerna.

  • Immunovant, Inc. is pursuing Graves' disease and thyroid eye disease with FcRn inhibitors, competing for the potential treatment markets targeted by Septerna's TSHR inhibitors.

  • Arcus Biosciences, Inc. and Septerna both develop inflammation therapies targeting MRGPRX2, putting their research programs in competition. Watch Arcus's research and preclinical MRGPRX2 program as it seeks its next wave of clinical candidates from inflammation and autoimmune diseases.

  • Amgen already sells TEPEZZA for thyroid eye disease, giving Septerna's TSHR program an existing treatment to compete against in its intended market.
