Company

Company overview

Rayonier Advanced Materials supplies manufacturers with wood-derived cellulose engineered to work in their production processes. Its cellulose specialties bring in most revenue and are the main source of profitability. Customers buy these materials for their purity, consistency and chemical properties; products must pass demanding customer qualification before use. This customization generally supports higher prices and margins than commodity pulp, with specialty prices usually negotiated annually.

The company can shift cellulose production between specialty grades and commodity products, mainly fluff pulp, as market conditions change. It also sells Kallima coated paperboard and high-yield pulp, using some of that pulp to make its own paperboard. A smaller biomaterials business sells wood-based bioethanol from Tartas under a long-term purchase agreement with a large international petrochemicals company.

Earnings depend on demand in customers’ end markets and the cost of wood, chemicals and energy. Most acetate-grade cellulose goes into material used for cigarette filters, while industrial ether grades are exposed to construction demand. Annual or fixed-price contracts can delay passing higher input costs to customers. Environmental permits restrict the amounts and types of products its plants may produce and can limit expansion.

  • Clearwater Paper competes with RYAM to sell paperboard to businesses that print and turn it into packaging, so its pricing and capacity help gauge pressure on RYAM’s Kallima board. Watch its supply to independent North American converters making folding cartons and food-service packaging.

  • Mercer International’s pulp sales face the same global demand, capacity and wood-cost cycle as RYAM’s commodity cellulose and high-yield pulp, though Mercer’s main NBSK grade differs from RYAM’s grades. Watch the prices and volumes Mercer sells to pulp buyers for clues to that cycle, rather than as a direct match for RYAM’s products.

  • Graphic Packaging competes with RYAM’s Kallima paperboard and also turns board into packaging sold to food, beverage and other consumer-goods companies. Its folding-carton business offers a view of demand further down the chain for a product category that partly cushioned RYAM’s 2025 paperboard sales decline.

  • Smurfit Westrock competes with RYAM’s Kallima paperboard, but its much broader business also makes board and turns it into corrugated boxes and consumer packaging for packaging customers. Its paperboard business is the closer comparison; group-wide results also reflect those broader packaging operations.
