Company

Company overview

Clearwater Paper Corporation supplies the board behind food-service packaging and folding cartons, which together generate most of its revenue. Its customers are mainly independent North American packaging converters: they buy the board, print it and turn it into items such as cups, beverage cartons and retail boxes. Clearwater focuses on folding-carton applications needing a high-quality printing surface, including pharmaceutical and cosmetics packaging.

The company makes bleached virgin-fiber paperboard, known as SBS. It offers cutting into sheets and narrow rolls but generally leaves finished packaging production to its customers rather than competing with them. After selling its former private-label tissue business to Sofidel America, Clearwater now focuses on paperboard packaging; it also sells smaller amounts of pulp.

The business depends on demand for SBS packaging, paperboard selling prices, and access to wood fiber and energy for its mills. A group of large customers contributes a substantial share of sales, with one customer particularly important; customer contracts are nonexclusive and generally do not require minimum purchases. Manufacturing also depends on environmental permits governing emissions, water discharges and waste, and permit failures can restrict operations.

Clearwater Paper’s results hinge on paperboard demand and industry capacity, so watch Georgia-Pacific and Sappi as competitors missing from this list.

  • Graphic Packaging competes with Clearwater Paper in board for folding cartons and food-service packaging, but also turns board into finished packaging for consumer-goods and food-service customers, while Clearwater supplies independent packaging converters. Watch its carton and cup demand and paperboard capacity changes for clues to demand and pricing pressure on Clearwater’s board.

  • Smurfit Westrock competes with Clearwater Paper in consumer-packaging board, making both board and finished packaging, while Clearwater sells board to independent converters; its larger corrugated-packaging operations make it a broader business. Watch its North American consumer-packaging paperboard capacity and pricing rather than treating its corrugated-box results as a direct guide to Clearwater.

  • Rayonier Advanced Materials (RYAM) competes with Clearwater Paper through its Paperboard business, but its main profit driver is high-purity cellulose made to customers’ specifications, not the board Clearwater sells to independent packaging converters. Its Paperboard selling prices are the more relevant signal for Clearwater than its overall profitability.
