Company

Company overview

Research Frontiers Inc’s SPD-SmartGlass technology lets users adjust how much light passes through a window or sunroof, helping control glare and heat. Voltage changes the alignment of light-absorbing particles in a film placed between glass or plastic layers. The company develops and licenses the technology rather than manufacturing finished glazing itself.

Manufacturers licensed to make finished products pay fees and royalties tied to their product sales. Research Frontiers collects those royalties at the finished-product stage, not on component sales between its licensees. Most fee income comes from several licensees serving the automotive market; applications include the Cadillac CELESTIQ roof and the Ferrari Purosangue’s optional sunroof. The technology also appears in aircraft and other glazing applications.

Revenue depends on licensees bringing products to market and selling them, including how widely automakers fit the technology to their vehicles. The supply chain also relies on Gauzy Ltd., the only source of commercially produced SPD film needed by finished-product licensees.

Research Frontiers depends on automakers adopting SPD dimmable glass and licensees bringing it to market, including Gauzy qualifying and mass-producing its new black SPD film.

  • Ferrari’s purchases of SPD dimmable glass for the Purosangue’s optional sunroof generate royalties for Research Frontiers through the licensed glazing suppliers, so both car production and buyers’ choice of the option matter. Royalty recognition also depends on minimum annual royalty provisions: the program exceeded those thresholds in the third quarter of 2025, allowing additional royalties to be recognized.

  • Gentex competes for vehicle and aircraft dimmable-window applications that could otherwise generate royalties for Research Frontiers’ licensed SPD glass. Gentex sells mirrors and electronics to automakers and suppliers using electrically controlled tinting called electrochromic technology; watch its window commercialization rather than treating mirror sales as evidence of SPD demand.

  • General Motors’ Cadillac CELESTIQ production feeds Research Frontiers’ royalty opportunity because GM buys licensed SPD roof glass as standard equipment, with the glazing licensees paying the royalties. Watch CELESTIQ production specifically, rather than GM’s mainstay full-size trucks and SUVs.

  • Textron’s Beechcraft King Air deliveries connect to Research Frontiers’ aviation royalty opportunity because production and new-aircraft installation programs use licensed SPD dimmable windows, whose licensed manufacturers pay royalties. Watch King Air deliveries within Textron Aviation’s aircraft sales, rather than Textron’s total revenue.
