Company overview

Purple Innovation sells mattresses and related products such as pillows and bed bases. Many use its patented GelFlex Grid cushioning material, which flexes under pressure and returns to provide support. Consumers buy through Purple.com and Purple showrooms, while retailers including Mattress Firm and Costco buy products for resale. Direct consumer sales provide the larger share of revenue and carry higher gross margins than wholesale sales; mattresses account for a large portion of gross profit.

Purple makes its proprietary cushioning at its Georgia plant, where it has consolidated mattress production. Outside manufacturers assemble some mattresses, and suppliers provide other materials and products. This makes the business dependent on that plant and outside production partners. Tempur Sherwood has exclusive assembly rights for certain product lines sold to Mattress Firm. One unnamed customer supplies a substantial share of revenue.

Purple also needs additional capital to fund operations, and its financing depends substantially on Coliseum, its largest stockholder and lender. Its credit agreement limits borrowing, acquisitions and distributions, among other actions. Separately, an earlier technology license gives a third party exclusive rights that could prevent Purple from selling mattresses using that technology in the European Union or medical industry.

  • Purple relies on Somnigroup International as well as competing with its mattress brands: its Mattress Firm stores buy Purple mattresses to sell to consumers, while Tempur Sherwood assembles certain Purple products exclusively. Watch Mattress Firm’s Purple program, which expanded from approximately 5,000 mattress slots to all 12,000 committed slots following the launch of the exclusive Purple Royale mattress.

  • La-Z-Boy and Purple both suffer when consumers postpone big-ticket home purchases: La-Z-Boy sells residential seating through its stores, websites and furniture dealers, while Purple sells mattresses to consumers and retail partners. La-Z-Boy’s sales to consumers through its stores and websites offer a read on that willingness to spend.

  • Flexsteel Industries shares Purple’s exposure to household demand for durable home products, selling residential furniture through U.S. retailers and online channels while Purple sells mattresses through consumer and wholesale channels. Flexsteel’s furniture revenue offers another view of demand for purchases such as sofas and bedroom furniture.

  • Hooker Furnishings Corporation and Purple both depend on consumers choosing to spend on premium home products: Hooker sells medium- and upper-priced residential furniture, while Purple sells premium mattresses and other comfort products. Watch Hooker’s upper-medium-priced bedroom furniture and upscale leather seating sales for clues to that spending appetite.
