Peoples Bancorp of North Carolina is the holding company behind Peoples Bank, which serves mainly individuals and small and medium-sized businesses in North Carolina’s Catawba Valley and surrounding communities. Customers place deposits with the bank, which uses those funds primarily to make loans and hold investments. Most business income comes from interest earned on loans and securities after paying interest on deposits and borrowed funds. Commercial real estate loans, including residential development loans to business customers, dominate its loan portfolio.
Banking is the main business, but the bank also owns CBRES, which earns fees for providing appraisal management services. The lending business depends on retaining customer deposits, the difference between lending and funding rates, and borrowers’ ability to repay. Its geographic concentration makes local business and property conditions particularly important.
The holding company has no operating business of its own; its principal income source is dividends from Peoples Bank, when declared and paid. North Carolina law limits those payments, and the bank cannot make a dividend or other capital distribution that would leave it undercapitalized.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
First Bancorp/NC’s First Bank competes with Peoples Bank for North Carolina households’ and businesses’ deposits and for loans to customers financing commercial property.
Commercial Bancgroup, Inc.’s Commercial Bank serves businesses and individuals in the Charlotte area, overlapping with Peoples Bank’s deposit and lending customers. Watch its loan and deposit rates, which it identifies as important in winning and retaining customers.
First Community Bankshares, Inc.’s First Community Bank competes with Peoples Bank in western North Carolina for individuals’ and businesses’ deposits and loans, with both relying on customer relationships to win business.
First Citizens BancShares competes with Peoples Bank for deposits and small-business banking customers in western North Carolina, putting it in direct competition for the local customers Peoples Bank serves.
SouthState Bank Corporation competes with Peoples Bank in Charlotte and surrounding North Carolina markets for household deposits and customers borrowing to fund businesses and property.
Peoples Bancorp of North Carol earningsThis company
Peoples Bank earns mainly from the gap between loan income and deposit costs, and this report will show whether loan growth adds net interest income without credit losses consuming the gain.
Read net interest income and net interest margin alongside the provision for credit losses. Rising income and margin with a contained provision would mean returns on loans and securities are outpacing funding costs without a material increase in expected loan losses. A narrower margin or a larger provision would show funding pressure, weaker loan pricing, or rising repayment risk is squeezing the bank’s earnings.
Housing Starts (Sep)
For Peoples Bank, new-home starts, permits and sales track homebuilding activity that can shape demand for its residential-development and construction loans to commercial customers, and borrowers’ ability to repay.
Expected1.31MLast release1.275M
If it comes in above expectations
If the reading is above the 1.31M estimate, it is above the previous 1.275M. More homebuilding than expected may bring Peoples Bank more loan demand from commercial customers financing residential development and construction, while stronger activity can support borrowers’ repayment.
If it comes in below expectations
Less homebuilding than expected may weaken Peoples Bank’s commercial customers’ demand for residential-development and construction loans and make repayment less secure.
SouthState Bank Corporation earningsSSB
SouthState Bank competes with Peoples Bank around Charlotte for deposits and business and property borrowers, so its report shows how customer demand and deposit competition are shifting in that market.
Look at SouthState Bank’s deposit balances, loan growth, and deposit costs. Growth in deposits and loans without a marked rise in deposit costs would suggest customer demand remains available in the shared market, giving Peoples Bank room to fund lending. Deposit losses or higher costs would point to fiercer funding competition that could squeeze Peoples Bank’s margin.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
For Peoples Bank, the Fed’s policy rate shapes the cost of deposits and borrowings as well as income from loans and securities, affecting the spread that drives its main source of income.
Expected4.0%Last release4.0%
If it comes in above expectations
If the policy rate is higher than expected, Peoples Bank may earn more as some loan and securities yields rise, but it may also pay more for deposits and borrowings; the net effect depends on which adjusts faster.
If it comes in below expectations
If the policy rate is lower than expected, Peoples Bank may pay less for deposits and borrowings, but income on some loans and securities may also fall; the net effect depends on which adjusts faster.
