Company

Company overview

OPAL Fuels Inc. builds, owns and operates facilities that process gas from landfills and dairy manure into renewable natural gas, or RNG. It supplies this fuel, along with RNG bought from other producers, to U.S. trucking fleets through fueling stations. Most revenue comes from the associated environmental credits and services that generate and sell them, rather than the gas itself. Businesses buy these credits to meet renewable-fuel and low-carbon-fuel requirements.

NextEra Energy Marketing has exclusive purchase rights over most of OPAL’s RIN and low-carbon fuel credits. OPAL generally receives the proceeds from NextEra’s onward sales, less a discount, making NextEra a key route to market. Station owners also pay OPAL to build and maintain natural-gas fueling stations. A smaller business burns landfill gas to generate electricity sold to utilities under power purchase agreements.

OPAL does not own its biogas project sites: production depends on contractual access, host cooperation and the quantity and quality of gas available. Its fuel business also needs fleets to use natural-gas vehicles. Credit income depends on government programs, market prices and regulatory qualification; projects must be registered and comply with program rules to generate and sell credits. Air-emissions standards have already prevented some of its electricity-generating equipment from operating in parts of California.

  • Customer
  • Clean Energy Fuels Corp. and OPAL compete for trucking fleets buying renewable natural gas (RNG), and both operate, build and maintain fueling stations. Watch Clean Energy’s RNG dispensing and environmental-credit sales: fleet adoption of natural-gas vehicles and credit prices affect both businesses.

  • Montauk Renewables, Inc. competes with OPAL for landfill and dairy gas rights; both build and operate plants that turn biogas into RNG or electricity and earn revenue from energy sales and environmental credits. Watch Montauk’s new gas-supply agreements and royalty terms, because competition for that gas can raise OPAL’s costs and reduce project profitability.

  • Ameresco, Inc.’s Renewable Fuels business competes with OPAL for landfill-gas and RNG projects; both develop and operate plants that sell gas or electricity. Watch that business’s project wins and fuel sales rather than Ameresco’s broader energy-efficiency work for government and commercial customers.

  • Waste Management, Inc.’s development of biogas-conversion projects at its own landfills competes with OPAL’s business of turning landfill gas into RNG and can leave fewer sites available to OPAL. Watch its landfill-energy project announcements rather than the collection fees it earns from businesses and households.
