Company

Company overview

Omnicom Group owns agency networks that help large companies reach customers and support sales. Clients pay its agencies to develop advertising, arrange media purchases and deliver related marketing and communications services. Media and advertising account for most revenue. Agencies work together on client assignments, using the proprietary Omni platform to connect data and technology across campaign planning, execution and measurement. Omnicom has also completed its merger with IPG, bringing IPG’s businesses into the group.

Revenue depends on clients continuing to fund marketing and communications work and choosing Omnicom when they review agency assignments. No single client dominates revenue, but its largest client relationships collectively supply most of it; clients can reduce or cancel spending on short notice. The business also relies on skilled employees to deliver its services. Personal information is critical to its advertising work, and privacy laws such as GDPR and CCPA restrict how that information can be used, including for targeted advertising.

Omnicom’s results hinge on global clients’ marketing budgets and competition from agency groups such as Publicis Groupe and Dentsu, two important rivals missing from this list.

  • WPP PLC competes with Omnicom for multinational clients paying for creative work, media, data and integrated marketing services. Watch WPP’s revenue from these client assignments for signs of pressure on the budgets Omnicom also pursues.

  • Stagwell Inc. competes with Omnicom for clients’ spending on creative advertising, buying ad space, commerce, experiential marketing and communications. Its Media & Commerce and Marketing Services results are worth watching because they cover work that clients also pay Omnicom to do.

  • Accenture’s Song business competes with Omnicom for enterprise clients paying for marketing, commerce and customer-experience work. That overlap is narrower than Accenture’s business as a whole, which also includes much broader technology operations.

  • Alphabet and Omnicom both depend on marketers’ campaign budgets: Alphabet sells Search and YouTube ads, while Omnicom earns fees for advertising services. Search and YouTube advertising revenue offers a read on the digital-ad spending that also supports Omnicom’s media business.

  • Meta Platforms and Omnicom draw revenue from the same campaign budgets: marketers pay Meta for digital ad placements and Omnicom for campaign planning and execution. Watch advertising revenue from Meta’s family of apps for a signal of spending that also supports Omnicom’s media and advertising services.

  • Criteo S.A. and Omnicom both rely on brands’ commerce advertising budgets: Criteo helps place ads across shopping journeys, while Omnicom provides media and commerce marketing services. Criteo’s Retail Media business, which helps retailers earn advertising revenue and brands advertise on and off retailers’ sites, is a concrete place to watch those budgets.

  • GLOBANT S.A.’s GUT business competes with Omnicom for clients paying for advertising, content, media, design and commerce services. Watch GUT’s client work for that overlap rather than treating Globant’s broader software-engineering business as a direct comparison with Omnicom.
