Northern Technologies International Corp. (NTIC) helps industrial customers protect metal parts and equipment from rust and corrosion. Its ZERUST business supplies most of its sales, selling protective packaging, treatments and corrosion-management services. The packaging releases a vapor that forms a protective layer on enclosed metal; that protection dissipates after unpacking. Automotive companies and their parts suppliers are important customers, so demand depends heavily on automotive and other industrial activity. NTIC also sells engineered corrosion protection to oil and gas customers, where adoption often involves lengthy trials.
Its smaller Natur-Tec business sells bio-based and certified compostable plastic resin compounds to plastics converters and foodservice-ware brands, as well as finished products such as bags and foodservice items to consumers and organizations. Resins used in food packaging must meet applicable U.S. FDA requirements for their intended uses; NTIC believes its compounds comply.
NTIC reaches customers through its own sales operations, subsidiaries, distributors and joint ventures. The joint ventures manufacture and sell corrosion-prevention products in their territories, paying NTIC for technical, marketing and other support. NTIC also earns a share of their profits, which supplies a significant part of its earnings. Germany’s EXCOR is its most important joint venture, making that relationship and EXCOR’s profitability especially consequential. Cash distributions from the ventures require agreement among their owners; NTIC cannot decide them alone.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
NTIC’s results hinge on industrial corrosion-protection demand, compostable-plastics sales and joint-venture earnings—notably from its German venture EXCOR—rather than on a close listed peer.
AZZ Inc. shares NTIC’s exposure to industrial and construction demand: NTIC sells corrosion-prevention products to industrial manufacturers, while AZZ charges fabricators and manufacturers to apply protective metal coatings. Demand from AZZ’s general industrial customers offers a read on the markets that also support NTIC’s ZERUST sales.
Durable Goods Orders MoM (Sep)
Durable goods orders track orders for long-lasting products such as vehicles and equipment; stronger or weaker buying can change automotive customers’ demand for NTIC’s ZERUST® corrosion-prevention products and services.
Expected0.2%Last release-0.1%
If it comes in above expectations
If the reading is above the 0.2% estimate, it is above the previous -0.1%. Automotive customers may order more ZERUST® products and services to protect the metal components in vehicles, supporting NTIC’s sales through its distributors and other channels.
If it comes in below expectations
Automotive customers may buy less ZERUST® protection as vehicle orders weaken, reducing demand for NTIC’s products and services sold through its distribution channels.
Northern Technologies International Corp. earningsThis company
Northern Technologies' report will show whether ZERUST sales and joint-venture income can support the business while product costs keep squeezing margins.
Read ZERUST sales alongside product costs as a share of sales, and then check the income Northern Technologies records from its joint ventures. Steady ZERUST sales with a lower cost share would mean its main products are selling and leaving more profit; weaker sales with costs still taking a large share would mean tighter product margins. Falling income from joint ventures would show pressure on a second earnings source, while steady income would cushion the product business. Joint-venture sales are not included in Northern Technologies' own sales; its recorded equity income is its share of those ventures' profits.
Industrial Production MoM (Oct)
Industrial production and capacity use track how much factories, mines and utilities produce and how much of their capacity they use; this can change industrial customers’ demand for NTIC’s ZERUST® corrosion-prevention products and services.
Stronger factory, mine and utility output suggests greater need for ZERUST® corrosion protection across industrial markets; weaker output suggests less customer demand for those products and services.
AZZ Inc. earningsAZZ
AZZ's report will show whether industrial customers are sustaining demand for protective metal coatings, a market that also supports Northern Technologies' industrial ZERUST sales.
Look at AZZ's business serving general-industrial customers and compare its direction with Northern Technologies' latest reported industrial ZERUST sales. Strength at AZZ would suggest metal fabricators and manufacturers are still buying protective coatings, a supportive sign for ZERUST demand but not proof that NTIC sales are rising. Weakness would point to a possible cooling in the industrial market both companies serve.
