Company

Company overview

Nelnet administers student and consumer loans for lenders and provides schools with technology to manage tuition and payments. These fee-based businesses, together with income from its own loan portfolio, drive its operations. Nelnet Diversified Services processes loan payments and handles borrower service. Its largest customer, the U.S. Department of Education, supplies most of its loan-servicing revenue and pays monthly fees based on borrower volume. That business depends on the Department’s contract terms and allocation of borrowers.

Through Nelnet Business Services, FACTS helps private and faith-based schools manage tuition, financial aid and school administration, while Nelnet Campus Commerce handles payments for colleges and universities. Nelnet earns fees from education services, tuition payment plans and payment processing; processing revenue moves with transaction volume.

Nelnet also owns a substantial portfolio of federally insured student loans, keeping the difference between the interest earned and its financing costs. Federal law ended new loans under the Federal Family Education Loan Program, or FFELP, so Nelnet no longer originates them, although it can buy existing portfolios. Income from those loans shrinks as borrowers repay them, and preserving their guarantees requires compliance with federal servicing rules. Nelnet is expanding private education and consumer lending, including through Nelnet Bank, to reduce reliance on that declining portfolio.

Beyond these lenders, watch the Department of Education’s servicing allocations and contract pricing: Nelnet’s results also depend on legacy FFELP loan spreads and repayments, and its education technology and payments businesses.

  • Navient Corporation and Nelnet both earn interest on legacy federally guaranteed student loans under FFELP and compete to provide private education loans and refinancing. Watch Navient’s loan interest income after funding costs and the pace of repayments: the same spread and shrinking-loan-book pressures affect Nelnet.

  • SLM Corporation, known as Sallie Mae, competes with Nelnet Bank to lend to students and families for education, with both using deposits to fund part of those loans. Sallie Mae’s new private education lending is a useful gauge of this market: it originated about $7.4 billion in 2025, up 6% from 2024.

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

Nelnet’s AGM earns interest on federally guaranteed student loans tied to SOFR, while its SOFR-linked debt incurs funding costs, so Federal Reserve rate decisions can change the interest spread between what it earns and pays as those rates reset.
