Company

Company overview

Newsmax runs its media business through Newsmax Media, with television broadcasting generating most of its revenue. Advertisers pay to reach viewers of its Newsmax pay-TV channel and free Newsmax2 streaming channel. Cable and satellite distributors also pay license fees based on subscriber numbers to carry Newsmax, while viewers pay directly for the Newsmax+ streaming subscription service.

Its smaller digital business sells advertising on websites and in publications, alongside paid subscriptions to Newsmax Magazine and health and financial newsletters. It also sells books and supplements, including through Medix Select.

Advertising is the largest source of revenue, making audience ratings and engagement central to the business. Newsmax also depends on a limited number of distributors to keep its channels available and favorably positioned. Losing carriage can reduce both license fees and the audience advertisers pay to reach, although no single customer supplies a dominant share of overall revenue.

Red flags

Know what’s buried in NMAX’s filings before you buy

The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.

  • Fox Corporation’s FOX News competes directly with Newsmax for cable-news viewers and the advertisers and pay-TV distributors that pay to reach them. Watch FOX News’s audience and distribution reach: these are central to Newsmax’s ability to win advertising and per-subscriber channel fees.

  • Versant Media Group, Inc.’s MS NOW and CNBC compete with Newsmax for national news viewers, advertisers’ budgets and revenue from television distributors that carry their channels. Their political and business-news audiences are the useful comparison for Newsmax, rather than Versant’s sports and entertainment portfolio.

  • Nexstar Media Group, Inc.’s NewsNation competes with Newsmax for national news audiences, advertising spending and a place in television distributors’ channel lineups. Watch NewsNation’s audience size: Nexstar says it affects both the fees distributors pay and the advertising rates it can charge.
