Company

Company overview

NovaGold Resources Inc. is developing its interest in Donlin Gold, its only material mineral property. The project is not producing gold and construction has not begun, so the company has no mining revenue. Investors buying newly issued shares have supplied most of the funding for exploration and company operations; bringing the mine into production will require further financing.

NovaGold owns a majority economic interest in Donlin Gold alongside Paulson, but the partners share voting control equally. Advancing the project therefore depends on Paulson’s cooperation, not just NovaGold’s decisions.

Development also requires government permits and continued compliance with agreements covering mineral rights held by Calista and surface rights held by TKC. The remote site lacks supporting infrastructure, so development depends on arranging power, transport and access. Whether an eventual mine can earn a profit depends substantially on the price of gold.

NOVAGOLD’s prospects hinge on financing and advancing Donlin Gold with current partner Paulson, not on earnings from gold production today.

  • Seabridge Gold, Inc. resembles NOVAGOLD as an investment in advancing gold deposits rather than current mine production: it uses shareholder funds to move deposits toward construction decisions, then seeks partners or asset buyers rather than operating mines itself. Its progress on KSM and finding partners offers a comparison for Donlin’s development path.

  • Vista Gold’s Mt Todd in Australia and NOVAGOLD’s Donlin both expose investors to gold-project development and financing, rather than cash generated by mining. Vista reported no mining operating revenue or mining cash flow in 2025 or 2024, making Mt Todd’s development progress the relevant comparison.

  • U.S. GoldMining Inc. and NOVAGOLD both rely on raising capital to advance non-producing projects in Alaska, rather than funding work with mining cash flow. U.S. GoldMining raises money from shareholders for its sole project, the Whistler gold-copper deposit, so its equity financings offer a comparison for Donlin’s funding needs.

  • Northern Dynasty Minerals, Ltd. and NOVAGOLD both face the conditions for developing large, non-producing mineral projects in Alaska, though Pebble and Donlin have different permitting risks. Northern Dynasty has no operating revenue and is advancing the Pebble copper-gold project toward feasibility, permits and development; its permitting news should not be treated as a direct verdict on Donlin.

  • Barrick Mining Corporation remains a creditor of NOVAGOLD after ceasing to co-own Donlin; unlike NOVAGOLD, it earns money from gold and copper mining. NOVAGOLD’s debt to Barrick carries interest linked to the U.S. prime rate, so rate changes affect the interest it accrues.

  • Newmont Corporation produces gold while NOVAGOLD develops Donlin, but its more direct financial link is a contingent US$75 million payment to NOVAGOLD from the Galore Creek asset sale. Watch for approval or commencement of Galore Creek construction, which triggers the non-interest-bearing payment; NOVAGOLD assigns it no value because approval is uncertain.

  • Kinross Gold Corporation gives NOVAGOLD investors an operating comparison in Donlin’s home state through its Fort Knox mine and 70% stake in Manh Choh in Alaska. Kinross sells refined gold to banks and refiners; watch Fort Knox and Manh Choh’s production for a regional mining benchmark rather than a measure of Donlin’s development progress.

  • Nova Minerals Corp offers a comparison for NOVAGOLD’s exposure to developing non-producing projects in Alaska: it explores Estelle for gold, antimony and other critical minerals while NOVAGOLD advances Donlin. Estelle generated no production-related revenue in the fiscal years ended June 30, 2026 and 2025, so its development progress matters more than current mineral sales.

  • Contango Silver & Gold Inc. provides a regional operating comparison for NOVAGOLD’s Donlin through its 30% interest in Alaska’s producing Manh Choh project, while also exploring other Alaska properties. It received US$102 million in cash distributions from the project’s joint venture in fiscal 2025—distributions, not revenue—showing cash from production that Donlin does not yet generate.

  • Higher gold prices benefit both Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd.’s gold sales and the prospective economics of NOVAGOLD’s Donlin, but only Agnico currently produces gold. Agnico traditionally sells its production at the current market price rather than locking in future sales prices, making its gold sales a more immediate reflection of gold-price moves.
