Murphy USA serves drivers through Murphy USA and Murphy Express fuel-focused stores and QuickChek convenience stores. Retail fuel sales provide most of its revenue; customers also buy snacks, drinks and nicotine products, with QuickChek offering more food and beverages. The company does not produce or refine fuel. It buys from outside suppliers and earns a margin between its purchase cost and pump price. Its fuel-supply operations also sell to unbranded wholesale customers, but primarily support its own stores.
Fuel purchasing costs and pump prices generally reset daily. Earnings depend heavily on the spread between them: a rapid rise in wholesale costs can squeeze margins before retail prices catch up. Most Murphy-branded stores are near Walmart stores, making Walmart shopper traffic and the relationship with Walmart important to sales. Murphy USA also participates in Walmart+ fuel discounts. For merchandise, it relies on Core-Mark International for most purchases.
Walmart retains rights over certain store properties, including first refusal on sales and restrictions on transferring substantially all Walmart-purchased properties to a Walmart competitor. Store sales of nicotine, alcohol and lottery products are also subject to licensing and local restrictions, including limits on sales to minors.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Murphy USA’s results hinge on retail fuel margins and convenience-store merchandise sales, making Core-Mark worth watching: it supplied more than 78% of merchandise purchases in 2025.
Casey’s competes with Murphy USA for convenience-store customers buying gasoline, snacks, beverages and nicotine products in overlapping U.S. markets. Watch Casey’s pricing and store openings in those markets for changes in the competition Murphy USA faces.
ARKO competes directly with Murphy USA for motorists and convenience-store shoppers in overlapping regions, selling fuel and similar merchandise. Its retail fuel and merchandise results are the relevant comparison for Murphy USA, rather than its fuel sales to dealers.
BJ’s Wholesale Club competes with Murphy USA and QuickChek for price-conscious motorists in overlapping eastern U.S. markets by selling discounted gasoline to paying members. Watch its member gasoline discounts, which show the price offers Murphy USA must compete against.
Walmart both brings shoppers to nearby Murphy USA stores and competes for their value-focused merchandise purchases. Its Sam’s Club gasoline sales also compete with Murphy USA for motorists.
EIA Crude Oil Stocks Change (Oct/16)
The EIA's weekly stock figures track how much crude oil and gasoline is held in storage, a signal of supply tightness that can change Murphy USA's fuel costs before its retail prices adjust and affect fuel margins and sales.
If crude oil and gasoline stocks build, supply is looser and prices tend to ease, which may lower Murphy USA's fuel costs; if stocks draw down, supply is tighter and costs may rise before retail prices adjust, squeezing fuel margins or affecting supply to stores.

Murphy USA's report will show whether retail fuel volume and contribution per gallon, alongside merchandise contribution, are supporting profit.
Read retail fuel gallons alongside fuel contribution per gallon, then compare merchandise sales with merchandise contribution. Steady volume, firmer fuel contribution and rising merchandise contribution would show both pumps and in-store purchases supporting profit. Weaker volume or contribution per gallon, or merchandise sales growth without stronger contribution, would show that revenue is not necessarily turning into better operating results.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
Fed decisions set the direction of interest rates, which can change what Murphy USA pays on its variable-rate term loan and revolving borrowings and leave less or more earnings after interest.

If it comes in above expectations
Higher rates can raise interest expense on Murphy USA's borrowings as they reprice, leaving less earnings after interest; the effect depends on how much debt reprices and when.
If it comes in below expectations
Lower rates can reduce interest expense as Murphy USA's borrowings reprice, leaving more earnings after interest; the effect depends on how much debt reprices and when.
ARKO Corp. earningsARKO
ARKO's report will show whether motorists in overlapping markets are still buying fuel and convenience goods at its stores, a read on the same business Murphy USA runs.
Read ARKO's retail fuel and merchandise results together, especially whether fuel volume and merchandise sales hold up. Strength in both would suggest demand for fuel and in-store purchases is holding in overlapping markets, a supportive setting for Murphy USA's stores. Weakness in either would point to pressure on the same customer spending and a tougher demand backdrop for Murphy USA.
Walmart Inc. earningsWMT
Walmart's report will show whether its nearby stores are still drawing shoppers past Murphy USA locations, and whether Walmart's value goods and Sam's Club fuel are competing for their spending.
Separate Walmart's sales and traffic signals from Sam's Club fuel results. Supported Walmart traffic would suggest nearby stores can still bring pass-by customers to Murphy USA. Stronger Walmart merchandise sales or more compelling Sam's Club fuel would indicate competing outlets may capture customer spending, putting more pressure on Murphy USA's in-store sales or fuel business.
BJs Wholesale Club Holdings, Inc. earningsBJ
BJ's Wholesale Club's report will show whether member fuel discounts are drawing price-conscious drivers in overlapping eastern markets, a read on the price competition Murphy USA faces.
Read BJ's fuel sales or volume alongside its member fuel discounts. Stronger fuel results would suggest the discounts are drawing local drivers, leaving Murphy USA to compete for the same motorists on price. Weaker fuel results would offer less evidence that the discounts are generating stronger fuel demand, and point to less pressure from this rival's pricing.
