Company overview

Matrix Service Co helps energy companies, utilities and industrial customers build, repair and maintain facilities. Storage tanks and terminals, including facilities for liquefied natural gas, generate most of its revenue. Power-generation facilities and power infrastructure provide the next-largest business, while other heavy industrial work contributes a smaller share. The company can take responsibility for an entire project, from engineering and purchasing equipment through construction, or perform only part of the work.

Customers pay under project and maintenance contracts. Most revenue comes from fixed-price work, where Matrix agrees to deliver a defined scope for a set price; its profit depends on keeping delivery costs within that price. Other contracts pay agreed labor rates and reimburse specified costs, or reimburse costs plus fees.

Most revenue comes from long-standing customer relationships, but a few large customers account for a substantial share, and the power business relies heavily on one customer. These relationships do not guarantee continuing work once projects or maintenance contracts end. New work depends on customers' construction and maintenance spending, and some projects cannot proceed without permits, regulatory approvals and other required agreements.

Matrix Service Co’s largest business hinges on winning and executing LNG, NGL, ammonia and other storage-infrastructure projects, which these mainly power- and industrial-focused peers reflect only partly.

  • Argan, Inc competes with Matrix Service Co for utilities’ and energy producers’ spending on designing, building and maintaining power plants. Argan’s power-plant construction business is the part to watch for conditions in this shared market.

  • MYR Group, Inc. competes with Matrix Service Co to build, upgrade and maintain electrical infrastructure for utilities and power-generation customers. MYR’s transmission-line, distribution-network and substation work offers a view of the market behind Matrix’s power-delivery business, rather than its LNG projects.

  • DXP Enterprises Inc shares Matrix Service Co’s exposure to energy and chemical facilities’ construction and maintenance spending: DXP sells them pumps and maintenance equipment, while Matrix builds and maintains their facilities. Watch DXP’s pump and maintenance-equipment business with those customers for another view of their spending.

  • NPK International Inc. shares Matrix Service Co’s exposure to spending on power-transmission expansion and grid reliability: NPK rents and sells mats that provide worksite access, while Matrix builds and upgrades power-delivery infrastructure. Power-transmission customers supplied about 60% of NPK’s rental and service revenue in 2025, making that revenue a useful line to watch.
