McGrath RentCorp’s largest business, Mobile Modular, supplies relocatable classrooms, offices and other temporary spaces to schools, businesses and government agencies. Customers pay rent rather than buy buildings for needs that may be temporary or constrained by budgets. Mobile Modular customizes, delivers, installs and maintains the buildings, with customers also paying related service costs. Rentals and rental-related services provide most company revenue; sales of new and previously rented equipment provide the other substantial source. Enviroplex also manufactures classrooms for sale to California schools.
The same rental model extends to Portable Storage, which delivers storage and office containers to customer sites, and TRS-RenTelco, which supplies electronic test instruments for engineering, manufacturing and communications-network work. McGrath commits capital to equipment that can serve successive customers over its useful life, recovering that investment through rent and eventual sales.
The business depends on keeping equipment rented at workable rates, maintaining it for reuse and resale, and choosing test equipment that remains relevant as technology changes. Public school districts are an important customer group, though no single customer dominates revenue. Classroom demand leans heavily on school funding, particularly voter-approved bonds in California, its largest classroom-rental market. Modular buildings must meet applicable building codes, and customers need use permits; some modular rental and sales activities also require dealer licenses, which McGrath holds.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
WillScot Holdings Corporation competes with Mcgrath Rentcorp for North American commercial, industrial and construction customers renting temporary modular space and portable storage. Watch WillScot’s revenue from those customer groups for a read on demand in McGrath’s overlapping rental markets.
United Rentals and Mcgrath Rentcorp draw rental demand from the same North American construction and industrial projects: United Rentals supplies equipment, while McGrath supplies temporary offices and storage containers. Its general rentals business is the part to watch for activity among these project customers.
Sunbelt Rentals Holdings, Inc. shares Mcgrath Rentcorp’s exposure to North American construction and industrial projects, renting equipment while McGrath rents temporary offices and storage. Watch Sunbelt’s North America – General Tool revenue rather than its company-wide results for this shared demand.
Keysight Technologies makes general-purpose test instruments for Mcgrath Rentcorp’s TRS-RenTelco fleet, which rents them to customers developing and testing electronic products. Keysight’s sales for research and development applications offer a view of spending by customers who can also rent test equipment from McGrath.
EquipmentShare.com Inc and Mcgrath Rentcorp both depend on U.S. construction jobsite activity: EquipmentShare rents construction equipment, while McGrath rents site offices and portable storage containers. EquipmentShare’s construction-equipment rental revenue is the relevant line to watch for demand from these projects.
Viavi Solutions Inc. supplies communications test equipment for Mcgrath Rentcorp’s TRS-RenTelco rental fleet, and both serve customers testing and installing communications networks. Watch VIAVI’s fiber-network instruments and wireless-test business for spending tied to those rental customers.
Fortive supplies Mcgrath Rentcorp through Fluke Networks, whose communications test instruments, together with other manufacturers’ products, make up a significant portion of TRS-RenTelco’s communications test equipment. McGrath rents these instruments to network installers and technicians; Fluke Networks product news is more directly relevant to this fleet than Fortive’s healthcare business.
United Rentals, Inc. earningsURI
United Rentals’ general rentals business offers a read on North American construction and industrial projects that also rent McGrath RentCorp’s temporary offices and storage containers.
Look at United Rentals’ General Rentals business, particularly its rental demand from construction and industrial customers. Stronger demand is consistent with those projects using more rented equipment, which can also support demand for McGrath RentCorp’s temporary offices and containers; weaker demand points to softer project activity, though United Rentals’ equipment mix and market share also affect its results.

McGrath RentCorp’s report shows whether rental revenue growth is turning into higher gross profit on rents, especially in its modular business.
Read rental revenue alongside gross profit on rents, especially for Mobile Modular. If both rise, the rental business is bringing in more revenue and more gross profit; if revenue rises but gross profit does not keep up, growth is not translating into stronger rental returns. Schools are an important customer group for the modular business, so these figures also help show whether rental growth has a solid business base.
Fortive Corporation earningsFTV
If Fortive reports on Fluke Networks’ communications-test products and support, its results can shed light on the supply behind some instruments McGrath RentCorp’s TRS-RenTelco rents to network technicians.
Look for any disclosure on demand for, or support of, Fluke Networks’ communications-test products; Fortive’s overall results are not a substitute for that detail. Steady product activity and continued support would be reassuring for the supply and upkeep of instruments TRS-RenTelco rents; weakening activity or questions about support would make fleet availability and replacement more important to watch.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
Fed rate decisions track the cost of borrowing across the economy, which can change what McGrath RentCorp pays on its variable-rate debt and leave less or more income after interest expense.
Expected4.0%Last release4.0%
If it comes in above expectations
If rates are higher than expected, interest on McGrath RentCorp’s variable-rate debt may rise, increasing interest expense and reducing net income.
If it comes in below expectations
If rates are lower than expected, interest on McGrath RentCorp’s variable-rate debt may fall, easing interest expense and supporting net income.
WillScot Holdings Corporation earningsWSC
WillScot Holdings Corporation’s report can show rental demand for temporary modular space and storage among commercial, industrial and construction customers, where it competes directly with McGrath RentCorp.
Watch WillScot’s revenue from commercial, industrial and construction customers. Growth would be consistent with firm rental demand in the shared markets, but could also reflect WillScot winning business from competitors; a decline would show weakness at this competitor and could mean softer demand or lost customers, not prove that McGrath RentCorp has the same result.
Keysight Technologies, Inc. earningsKEYS
Keysight’s sales for research-and-development applications show spending on test instruments by customers developing electronic products, some of whom also rent general-purpose equipment from McGrath RentCorp’s TRS-RenTelco.
Watch the direction of Keysight’s sales for research-and-development applications, treating them as a signal of customers’ instrument spending, not as McGrath RentCorp’s own rental revenue. Stronger sales would be consistent with greater test-equipment spending by electronic-product developers and could support their need to rent TRS-RenTelco’s general-purpose equipment; weaker sales would point to restraint in research and testing that could also weigh on rentals.
