Company

Company overview

Matthews International’s largest business supplies cemeteries, funeral homes and crematories with memorials, caskets, cremation equipment and related supplies. Cemeteries and monument dealers buy its memorials to sell to consumers, while cremation operators also pay for maintenance, replacement parts and consumables. Demand depends on death rates and families’ choices between burial and cremation: a shift toward cremation supports some products but reduces demand for burial caskets and traditional memorials.

Its Industrial Technologies business sells equipment that helps manufacturers produce batteries, mark products for identification and move goods through warehouses. Vehicle producers and battery manufacturers buy its battery-production equipment; manufacturers, retailers and logistics companies buy its marking and warehouse systems. Equipment sales also generate service, spare-parts and consumables business. No single customer dominates company-wide sales, but energy-storage project billing depends on contractual milestones, and customer delays have held up project timing and invoicing, including on ongoing Tesla projects.

Matthews also retains a cylinders business and a minority stake in Propelis. In May 2025, it transferred most of its Brand Solutions operations, known as SGK, to Propelis. Its exposure to those operations is now through that investment rather than direct ownership of the business, and Matthews does not control Propelis’s operations or distributions.

Matthews International depends chiefly on funeral and cemetery demand for its Memorialization business, alongside battery-equipment projects and its 40% stake in Propelis.

  • Tesla, which sells electric vehicles and energy-storage products, buys battery-making equipment from Matthews International, so its project delays can hold up Matthews’ invoicing. Watch progress on those equipment projects and Tesla’s disputes over dry-electrode technology, which could affect Matthews’ operating results.
