LSI Industries Inc helps retailers, restaurants and other commercial customers equip their locations and update their appearance. Most revenue comes from Display Solutions, which supplies signs, graphics, refrigerated displays and store fixtures. Customers buy these products and related services, often through programs that update multiple locations over time. LSI primarily sells these programs directly and manages work such as site surveys, permits and installation coordination.
Lighting is the other substantial business. LSI sells indoor and outdoor fixtures for commercial properties, supplying customer projects mainly through electrical distributors and independent sales representatives. It also sells standard products to distributors that hold inventory for resale. Customers can use LSI for both lighting and displays across regional or national location programs.
Sales are primarily in the United States and are concentrated in grocery stores and refueling and convenience stores. Demand therefore depends heavily on those customers’ spending on expansion and refurbishment. Custom display programs also depend on customers following through on commitments; cancellations can leave LSI with products that other customers cannot use.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
These peers cover lighting, but LSI’s results increasingly depend on grocery and refueling/convenience-store spending on display rollouts, with Display Solutions accounting for 62% of sales.
Acuity Inc. competes with LSI for customers buying lighting fixtures and controls for non-residential buildings and outdoor spaces, exposing both to construction, renovation and lighting-control upgrade spending. Watch Acuity’s lighting business, ABL, for signs of demand for the fixtures and controls LSI also sells.
Orion Energy Systems, Inc. and LSI compete for commercial customers buying LED lighting and project-management services across multiple locations, so spending on lighting upgrades matters to both. Orion’s national-account, multi-location retrofit work is a useful place to watch that demand.
EIA Crude Oil Stocks Change (Oct/16)
For LSI Industries, the EIA’s weekly count of crude oil and fuel held in storage matters because tighter or looser supply can shift petroleum-industry conditions and spending by refueling and convenience-store customers on LSI lighting.
Falling crude and fuel stocks point to tighter supply and potentially firmer petroleum-industry conditions, which could support LSI’s lighting sales to refueling and convenience-store customers; rising stocks point to looser supply and possible pressure on those purchases.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
For LSI Industries, the Fed’s policy rate—the benchmark that influences borrowing costs—matters because changes can raise or lower interest expense on its floating-rate term loan and revolver, changing cash left for the business.

If it comes in above expectations
If the policy rate is higher than expected, higher borrowing costs would increase interest paid on LSI’s floating-rate debt and leave less cash for operations and investment.
If it comes in below expectations
If the policy rate is lower than expected, lower borrowing costs would reduce interest paid on LSI’s floating-rate debt and leave more cash for operations and investment.

LSI Industries’ report will show whether sales in Display Solutions and Lighting are turning into profit and cash after its Royston acquisition.
Read sales in the two segments alongside adjusted operating income, LSI Industries’ non-GAAP measure, and operating cash flow. If sales rise and profit and cash keep pace, Royston-related and other growth is translating into profitable execution and cash to pay down debt. If sales rise but profit or cash lags, costs, business mix or integration demands are absorbing the growth, leaving less improvement in debt repayment capacity.
Acuity Inc. earningsAYI
Acuity Inc.’s report will show demand for the non-residential and outdoor lighting fixtures and controls that it and LSI Industries both sell.
Watch sales and order trends in Acuity Inc.’s lighting business, ABL. If both strengthen, customers are still buying the fixtures and controls that LSI Industries also sells, supporting demand for its lighting projects. If both weaken, shared demand is softening and winning projects may become harder.
