Company

Company overview

KORU Medical Systems supplies equipment that delivers relatively large volumes of medicine beneath the skin, including for patients receiving treatment at home. Its FREEDOM system uses a mechanical syringe driver connected to tubing and needles, without batteries or electricity. Its main business supports immunoglobulin therapies, including Hizentra and Cuvitru, used to treat primary immune deficiencies and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, a nerve disorder.

Sales of these devices and supplies generate nearly all revenue, with the United States and Canada contributing the largest share. Specialty pharmacies and home-infusion providers buy the products, principally through medical-device distributors. Most revenue passes through a small group of distributors, and one U.S. distributor accounts for a substantial share. KORU also sells equipment to biopharmaceutical companies for drug trials and charges for engineering, testing and regulatory work to adapt its system for their therapies.

Demand depends on the availability of compatible drugs, particularly immunoglobulin therapies that rely on blood-plasma collection, and on insurance reimbursement for the drugs and devices. Manufacturing also depends heavily on Command Medical Products, which supplies all consumables subassemblies and makes most finished tubing and needle products. The FREEDOM system has regulatory clearance for specified drug uses; new uses or significant changes generally require further U.S. clearance or approval before marketing.

KORU’s results hinge chiefly on growth in subcutaneous immunoglobulin treatment and adoption of its FREEDOM pumps and recurring consumables, not broad medical-device spending.

  • ICU Medical competes with KORU to sell infusion pumps and accompanying consumables to home-health and other providers outside hospitals, though ICU Medical serves a much broader market. Watch its pump pricing and consumables sales to those providers for signs of competitive pressure on KORU’s FREEDOM systems.
