Company

Company overview

Insteel Industries, Inc. turns steel wire rod into reinforcement that strengthens concrete structures and helps control cracking. Welded wire reinforcement, sold in standard forms or made to customers’ specifications, brings in most revenue. Its other product line is prestressed concrete strand: high-strength steel strands used to place concrete under compression so it can carry loads.

Concrete-product manufacturers buy most of its output; distributors, rebar fabricators and contractors buy the rest. Sales are overwhelmingly in the United States, and most are tied to nonresidential construction. Demand therefore follows construction activity, with weather and changes in customers’ inventories also affecting orders.

Profitability depends on the gap between product selling prices and the cost of steel wire rod, its main raw material. Selling prices tend to follow wire rod prices, but competition can prevent timely or full recovery of higher costs. Insteel uses domestic and imported wire rod, and trade policy affects imports’ cost and availability. For certain applications, Buy America or Buy American rules require domestically melted and cast steel, limiting overseas sourcing and requiring Insteel to certify compliance.

Insteel’s results hinge on U.S. nonresidential construction and the gap between reinforcement selling prices and wire rod costs, with Wire Mesh Corporation and Sumiden Wire Products Corporation key competitors to watch.

  • Nucor competes for U.S. construction customers with concrete-reinforcing products that rival Insteel’s steel wire reinforcement. Watch Nucor’s reinforcement business for signs of price competition in markets where Insteel competes on price, quality and service.

  • Gerdau’s North American sales of construction steel, such as rebar and wire rod, face construction spending and steel-price forces that also shape demand and pricing for Insteel’s concrete reinforcement. Watch its North American long-steel business for clues to those shared market conditions, rather than its worldwide steel results.

    Housing Starts (Sep)

Insteel’s steel reinforcement for concrete construction depends partly on homebuilding: about 15% of fiscal 2025 sales were tied to residential construction, so new-home activity can change customer orders and shipments.
