Gerdau mainly melts scrap metal in electric furnaces and turns it into products such as reinforcing bars and beams for construction, and special steels for automotive and other industrial uses. Customers pay for the steel they buy, either directly from its mills or through distributors and its retail network. In North America, its main buyers are businesses that process and distribute steel, fabricators and equipment manufacturers.
All its operations are in the Americas. North America supplies most of its revenue, with Brazil the other major business. Operations outside Brazil mainly serve local markets, while Brazilian mills supply both domestic customers and export markets.
Earnings depend on construction and industrial demand, and on steel selling prices relative to scrap and energy costs. Its electric furnaces need reliable electricity supplies, and higher scrap costs squeeze margins unless steel prices rise too. Its activities also require environmental permits; failure to obtain or renew them, or meet their conditions, can suspend affected operations.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Commercial Metals Company competes with Gerdau for North American construction steel buyers, especially steel used to reinforce concrete. Watch CMC’s fabricated rebar business: its project bids give a view of construction demand, although many prices stay fixed for the project’s life.
Nucor competes with Gerdau to supply steel and steel products to North American construction and industrial customers. Its steel-mill sales are the clearest business line to watch alongside Gerdau’s sales to steel distributors, fabricators and equipment manufacturers.
ArcelorMittal competes with Gerdau in both Brazilian bars and structural steel and flat products such as sheet and plate, selling to industries including construction, automotive and machinery. Its Brazilian steel pricing is worth watching against the domestic oversupply and imports that pressured Gerdau’s prices.
Steel Dynamics competes with Gerdau for North American steel buyers, including customers buying special-quality steel bars. Watch news about those bars rather than its aluminum or recycled-metal sales when assessing competition with Gerdau.
Ternium competes with Gerdau in Mexican long steel and, through Usiminas, Brazilian sheet and plate, selling steel to producers, processors and end users. Its Mexican rebar and wire-rod business and Usiminas’ Brazilian flat-steel business are the relevant areas to watch, rather than Ternium’s iron-ore sales.
CSN and Gerdau compete in Brazilian long and flat steel, so both face domestic demand shifts and price pressure from imports. Watch CSN’s Brazilian flat-steel sales to customers such as construction and appliance businesses, rather than its overseas steel sales, for a closer comparison with Gerdau’s Brazilian market.
Metallus competes directly with Gerdau Special Steel North America in steel bars under 6 inches in diameter, made to customers’ specifications for automotive and industrial uses. News about these special-bar-quality products is a more focused read on Gerdau’s competition than Metallus’ tubing or manufactured components.
Grupo Simec competes with Gerdau in Brazilian long steel and with Gerdau Corsa for Mexican structural-steel buyers. Its Brazilian rebar and Mexican beams, channels and angles are the products to watch; its U.S. plants ceased production in 2023 and did not operate in 2024 or 2025.
Gerdau S.A. earningsThis company
Gerdau’s report will show whether North American sales and pricing can offset pressure on profits from Brazilian steel prices.
Read shipments and net sales per tonne in Brazil and North America together, then check consolidated gross margin. If North American volume and sales per tonne strengthen, Brazilian sales per tonne stop falling and gross margin holds, North American sales are offsetting Brazilian price and cost pressure. If North American volume or sales per tonne weakens while Brazilian sales per tonne falls further and gross margin narrows, that offset is not enough and profits remain under pressure.
Nucor Corporation earningsNUE
Nucor’s steel-mill sales will show how North American construction and industrial buyers are taking steel, and whether market supply is limiting what Gerdau can charge.
Read Nucor’s steel-mill sales volumes alongside its prices. Steady volume and prices would suggest North American construction and industrial demand is absorbing steel supply, supporting Gerdau’s local sales. Rising volume with weaker prices would point to supply competition capping prices, so Gerdau could ship more without gaining as much revenue.
Durable Goods Orders MoM (Sep)
Durable goods orders track purchases of long-lasting goods and equipment; stronger orders can prompt Gerdau’s manufacturing, automotive and equipment customers to buy more of its steel, lifting shipments, while weaker orders can reduce them.
Expected0.2%Last release-0.1%
If it comes in above expectations
If the reading is above the 0.2% estimate, it is above the previous -0.1%. More orders than expected could lead Gerdau’s manufacturing, automotive and equipment customers to increase steel purchases, supporting its shipments; the effect depends on how much of that demand reaches the company’s products.
If it comes in below expectations
Fewer orders than expected could lead Gerdau’s manufacturing, automotive and equipment customers to cut steel purchases, weakening its shipments; the effect depends on how much demand for the company’s products recedes.
Metallus Inc. earningsMTUS
Metallus’s report will show demand and pricing for special steel bars used by automotive and industrial customers, where it competes directly with Gerdau in North America.
Look for Metallus’s sales volume and pricing for special steel bars, if reported separately. Steady or stronger volume and prices would suggest customer demand remains firm, supporting Gerdau’s comparable bars. Weaker volume or pricing would point to pressure on orders or prices in this market, putting more strain on Gerdau’s specialty-steel business.
ArcelorMittal earningsMT
ArcelorMittal’s Brazilian steel sales and pricing will show how market pressure is affecting products that overlap with Gerdau’s.
Read ArcelorMittal’s reported Brazilian steel volumes and prices, especially for products that overlap with Gerdau’s bars, structural steel and flat products. Stable or improving volume and prices would point to support for sales and pricing in Brazil. Falling prices alongside weaker volume would suggest competition and supply pressure persist, making it harder for Gerdau to improve Brazilian selling prices.
Industrial Production MoM (Oct)
Industrial production and capacity use track factory, mine and utility output and how much available capacity is operating; stronger US industrial activity can prompt Gerdau’s North American and other industrial customers to buy more steel, supporting shipments.
If factory, mine and utility output rises, stronger industrial demand may prompt Gerdau’s customers to buy more steel and support shipments, especially in North America; falling output may weaken their purchases and shipments.
Commercial Metals Company earningsCMC
Commercial Metals’ fabricated rebar business and project bids will show demand for reinforcing steel in North American construction, a market Gerdau also serves.
Read Commercial Metals’ reported fabricated-rebar business and project activity. Stronger activity would suggest construction customers need more reinforcing steel, supporting demand for Gerdau’s construction products; weaker activity would mean less demand support. Project prices often stay fixed for the life of a project, so changes in steel costs may not immediately show up in fabrication revenue or profit.
