IDEX Corporation supplies businesses that need to move, measure or process fluids, or use precision components in scientific and industrial work. Customers in markets such as life sciences, semiconductors, water and energy pay it for specialized components and equipment, including products built to their specifications. It operates worldwide through largely autonomous subsidiaries.
Health and science technologies provide its largest revenue stream, including precision fluid-handling products, optical components and sealing solutions. Together with pumps, valves, meters and related fluid-handling systems, these businesses generate most of its sales. A smaller business supplies firefighting and rescue equipment, paint-dispensing equipment and industrial banding and clamps.
Revenue is spread across many customers rather than relying heavily on one buyer. Most products have short delivery times, and IDEX adjusts production to incoming orders rather than depending on a large backlog. Demand therefore depends on customers’ current activity and spending on equipment and capacity.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Ingersoll Rand competes with IDEX for industrial and life-science customers buying pumps, precision liquid-handling equipment, compressors and blowers. Its Precision and Science Technologies sales offer a window into the customers served by IDEX’s precision fluidics business.
Dover competes with IDEX for process-equipment buyers purchasing industrial and biopharma pumps and critical fluid-handling parts. Watch Dover’s Pumps & Process Solutions business rather than its total sales for the closer read on IDEX’s overlapping markets.
Graco competes with IDEX in equipment that moves liquids and precisely mixes and dispenses paints and colorants, selling mainly through distributors and retailers. Its mixing and dispensing equipment is the closer comparison for IDEX’s paint-dispensing business, rather than its paint sprayers for homeowners and contractors.
Nordson competes with IDEX for industrial and healthcare equipment buyers needing precise fluid dispensing and medical components. Its dispensing products and medical components are the parts of its business to watch for a read on IDEX’s overlapping customers.
ITT Inc. competes with IDEX for industrial, chemical and energy customers: ITT sells industrial pumps and components that control flow, while IDEX sells pumps and valves for those applications.
Flowserve competes with IDEX to supply pumps, valves and seals for industrial, chemical and energy processes. Its pump business, its largest segment, is the clearest place to watch sales to customers in these overlapping markets.
Xylem competes with IDEX for water-sector customers buying pumping, measurement and flow-monitoring equipment. Its water-pumping and metering businesses offer a more focused view of that market than IDEX’s broader fluid-handling business.
The Gorman-Rupp Company competes with IDEX in pumps and pump systems sold for liquid handling. Because pumps are its only business segment, its sales provide a more focused comparison for IDEX’s pump business than a diversified manufacturer’s total sales.
Emerson Electric competes with IDEX for process-industry buyers: Emerson sells instruments that measure flow and valves that control it, overlapping with IDEX’s flow meters and valves.
Graco Inc earningsGGG
Graco’s report will show whether paint and colorant customers are still buying mixing and dispensing equipment, the same customer market served by IDEX’s paint-dispensing business.
Focus on Graco’s mixing and dispensing equipment, not its sprayers for homeowners and contractors. If sales in the former grow, overlapping customers are still buying equipment, supporting demand for IDEX’s paint-dispensing business. If they fall, those customers are buying less equipment and the market facing IDEX may be weaker, though that alone does not show IDEX is losing orders.
The Gorman-Rupp Company earningsGRC
The Gorman-Rupp Company’s report will show whether liquid-handling customers are buying more pumps and pump systems, a market also served by IDEX’s Fluid & Metering Technologies business.
Read sales and profit margins at this pump-focused company together. If both strengthen, liquid-handling customers appear to be buying steadily, supporting the market for IDEX’s pump business. If both weaken, customer demand may be softening and IDEX’s pump business faces a weaker market. The companies have different products and customer mixes, so this shows the direction of a shared market, not IDEX’s own sales.
Xylem Inc earningsXYL
Xylem’s report will show whether water-sector customers are buying more pumps, meters and flow-monitoring equipment, markets also served by IDEX’s Fluid & Metering Technologies business.
Focus on Xylem’s water-pumping and metering businesses rather than treating all its sales as a measure of water demand. If those sales strengthen, water customers are still buying equipment, supporting demand for IDEX’s water pumps and flow-monitoring products. If they weaken, purchasing in this customer market may be cooling, but that does not establish how IDEX is doing in other markets such as industry or energy.
Durable Goods Orders MoM (Sep)
IDEX sells pumps, valves, meters and other components into industrial markets, so durable-goods orders track demand for long-lasting equipment that can lead customers to buy more or fewer of its products.
Expected0.2%Last release-0.1%
If it comes in above expectations
If the reading is above the 0.2% estimate, it is above the previous -0.1%. More orders than expected would point to stronger equipment demand, which may lead industrial customers to place more orders for IDEX components and support sales.
If it comes in below expectations
Fewer orders than expected would point to weaker equipment demand, which may lead industrial customers to cut or delay orders for IDEX components and reduce sales.
IDEX Corporation earningsThis company
IDEX’s report will show whether customer demand is spreading from Health & Science Technologies to Fluid & Metering Technologies and Fire & Safety/Diversified Products, and whether sales growth is producing more profit.
Read sales and profit margins for all three businesses together, and check whether growth comes from volume or price. If volumes recover in Fluid & Metering and Fire & Safety/Diversified Products as well as Health & Science Technologies, while margins hold or improve, demand is broadening and added sales are reaching profit. If volumes in the first two remain weak, growth relies mainly on price increases, or margins fall, customer demand has not broadly recovered or costs are absorbing the sales gains.
Ingersoll Rand Inc. earningsIR
Sales at Ingersoll Rand’s Precision and Science Technologies business will show whether industrial and life-science customers are buying precision fluid-handling equipment, customer markets that overlap with IDEX’s Health & Science Technologies business.
Watch sales in Ingersoll Rand’s Precision and Science Technologies business, not its company-wide total. If those sales grow, overlapping industrial and life-science customers are still buying precision fluid-handling equipment, supporting demand for IDEX’s Health & Science Technologies business. If sales fall, those customers may be pulling back, but that says nothing about IDEX’s other end markets.
Emerson Electric Co. earningsEMR
Emerson’s relevant businesses will show whether process-industry buyers are purchasing more flow-measurement instruments and control valves, products that compete with IDEX’s flow meters and valves.
Focus on Emerson’s relevant instrument and valve businesses, not its company-wide results. If those sales strengthen, process-industry customers are still buying equipment to measure and control flow, supporting demand in the markets for IDEX’s flow meters and valves. If they weaken, those customers may be slowing purchases and the market for IDEX’s related products may be softer, but that does not settle demand for its pumps.
Industrial Production MoM (Oct)
IDEX sells pumps, fluid-handling systems and other components to industrial customers, so factory, mine and utility output and capacity use indicate demand that can affect its sales and how efficiently it uses its own production capacity.
Stronger output and capacity use suggest industrial customers may need more IDEX products and that IDEX can use its production capacity more fully; weaker readings point to softer orders and a greater risk of underused capacity.
