Company

Company overview

Water treatment is Hawkins’ largest business. Municipal water systems and industrial facilities buy its chemicals to treat drinking water, wastewater and water used in production. Hawkins also supplies pool and agricultural water-treatment customers. Alongside chemicals, it sells and services equipment and designs and builds filtration systems.

The company also supplies manufacturers with ingredients and industrial chemicals. Its Food and Health Sciences business sources, processes and blends ingredients for food, nutrition, pharmaceutical and agricultural products. Industrial Solutions supplies bulk chemicals, blends them to customers’ specifications and repackages them into smaller quantities. Product sales account for nearly all revenue, and customers are overwhelmingly in the United States. Sales are spread across customers rather than concentrated in one buyer.

Keeping customers supplied depends on access to raw materials, while earnings also depend on passing changes in chemical costs through to selling prices; those adjustments can lag. Chemical handling and transport must meet environmental and safety requirements. Food, pharmaceutical and health-related products face additional rules governing production, labeling and sale, which can require reformulation or prevent a product from being sold.

Hawkins’s results depend chiefly on U.S. water-treatment demand, growth through acquisitions, and reliable chemical supplies at costs it can pass on to customers.

  • Ashland competes with Hawkins for manufacturers and formulators buying pharmaceutical excipients—ingredients used in making medicines—and specialty nutrition and food ingredients. Ashland’s pharmaceutical and nutrition business results are worth watching for signs of demand among customers that Hawkins also serves through ingredient distribution and formulation services.
