Company

Company overview

Heritage Global Inc. connects banks and other lenders with buyers for loans that are no longer being paid or have been written off. Its NLEX business runs an electronic auction exchange in the United States and Canada, typically collecting commissions from both sellers and buyers. HGC also lends to investors buying these loan portfolios, earning interest, fees and a share of profits.

The company also helps businesses sell surplus or distressed industrial assets. HGP arranges auctions, values equipment and advises sellers for fees; it may also buy machinery or entire manufacturing facilities for resale. ALT buys, refurbishes and resells specialized laboratory equipment, particularly for the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors.

The business depends on a continuing supply of asset-sale assignments and assets to resell. Lending repayment depends on borrowers collecting the debts in the portfolios they buy. The disclosed lending portfolio is heavily concentrated in one borrower that has defaulted on payments. On some loans, senior financing partners have priority over collateral or control its sale, which can limit Heritage Global’s recovery.

Beyond industrial auctions, HERITAGE GLOBAL INC’s results hinge on charged-off loan portfolio sales and recoveries from its concentrated specialty-lending exposure—neither is captured by these peers.

  • Liquidity Services, Inc. competes with HERITAGE GLOBAL INC for sellers entrusting surplus industrial equipment to their auction marketplaces and for buyers of that equipment.

  • RB Global, Inc. competes with HERITAGE GLOBAL INC by auctioning used industrial equipment and providing appraisal services to commercial sellers and buyers. Its construction and transportation equipment transactions are the part to watch for a read on the used-equipment market Heritage serves.
