Company

Company overview

Healthcare Services Group runs everyday support services at healthcare facilities across the continental United States, mainly nursing homes and other long-term-care facilities. Customers pay it under service contracts to manage on-site staff and provide supplies. When taking over a department, it typically hires and trains the facility’s existing employees and assigns an on-site manager rather than simply supplying outside advice.

Food service brings in slightly more revenue than housekeeping and laundry. Its Dietary business buys food, prepares meals and provides dietitians who tailor menus to residents’ needs. Environmental Services cleans and disinfects rooms and common areas and launders linens and clothing. Wages are a major cost in both businesses, while food purchases also weigh heavily on Dietary. Earnings depend on staffing these operations and passing higher labor and supply costs through to customers, which is not always automatic or immediate.

The facilities—not government reimbursement programs—owe the company payment. Many customers depend heavily on Medicare and Medicaid, so their funding and cash flow affect the company’s ability to collect. Genesis Healthcare, a significant customer served by both businesses, has filed for bankruptcy protection.

The company also depends on Sysco Corporation to distribute most of its food and dining supplies. It negotiates many purchase terms directly with manufacturers, but Sysco handles orders and deliveries to facilities.

Healthcare Services Group’s results hinge on long-term-care customers’ ability to pay, as the $63.9 million of 2025 bad-debt expense associated with the Genesis bankruptcy shows.

  • National Healthcare Corp.’s skilled nursing occupancy and financial health offer a read on demand and payment conditions for Healthcare Services Group, which healthcare facilities pay to manage housekeeping, laundry and meals. Watch NHC’s nursing-facility occupancy and finances for signs of pressure on the operators that buy these services, many of whom depend heavily on Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement.

  • Healthcare Services Group depends on Sysco to track orders and deliver food and non-food dining supplies: Sysco handled more than half of these supplies in 2025. Watch Sysco’s delivery reliability and distribution costs, because disruptions could force alternative arrangements for HCSG’s facility-paid meal services, which generated 55.1% of its 2025 revenue.

  • Brookdale Senior Living, Inc.’s senior-living operations face the resident-demand and staffing-cost pressures that also shape Healthcare Services Group’s labor-intensive dining and housekeeping contracts with retirement and long-term-care facilities. Watch Brookdale’s occupancy and community staffing costs for clues to those facilities’ demand for services and room in their budgets to pay for them.

  • Sonida Senior Living, Inc. and Healthcare Services Group both depend on resident demand and facility-service costs, though Sonida charges residents for housing and care while HCSG charges retirement and long-term-care facilities for managing meals and housekeeping. Sonida’s occupancy and staffing costs offer a view of conditions serving primarily people aged 75 and older, rather than a direct measure of HCSG’s customer payments.
