Greenlight Capital Re helps insurance companies share the cost of claims. Insurers pay it premiums to take an agreed share of their risks or cover losses above a specified level. Premiums supply most of its revenue, and underwriting earnings depend on what remains after claims, commissions and operating costs. It generally receives premiums before paying claims.
Most of its insurance business comes through Open Market, which obtains reinsurance contracts through brokers and Lloyd’s. Aon, Marsh & McLennan, Howden and Arthur J. Gallagher together bring in most of that segment’s premiums. Business supported through its Lloyd’s corporate member, GCM, is also a substantial part of Open Market. Its smaller Innovations business supplies insurance and reinsurance backing to startups and managing general agents that arrange coverage for customers, often alongside an investment in the partner.
Investment income is the other main revenue source. Through Solasglas, the company invests mainly in publicly traded shares and corporate debt, taking positions intended to benefit from both rising and falling prices. DME Advisors is the exclusive investment adviser, so the company depends on this investment arrangement and has limited freedom to use other managers.
The business must maintain regulatory capital and provide collateral where it is not licensed or admitted as a reinsurer. Its exemption from U.S. investment-company regulation also depends on remaining primarily a reinsurer rather than principally a securities investment business.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Greenlight Re’s results also hinge on Solasglas’s long-short investment performance, which conventional reinsurance peers do not fully capture.
SiriusPoint competes with Greenlight Re to take on risks for insurers and provide backing for policies originated by managing general agents (MGAs). Watch how SiriusPoint allocates underwriting capital between Insurance & Services and Reinsurance for a view of where it is pursuing that business.
Hamilton Insurance Group competes with Greenlight Re through Hamilton Re, taking on insurers’ property, casualty and specialty risks worldwide; both groups also underwrite at Lloyd’s. Hamilton’s Syndicate 4000 is worth watching alongside Greenlight Re’s Lloyd’s business, which supplied about 36% of its Open Market gross premiums written in 2025.
RenaissanceRe competes with Greenlight Re for insurers’ premiums by taking on property, casualty and specialty risks under reinsurance treaties. Its Property and Casualty and Specialty underwriting results are the relevant comparison, rather than the fees it earns managing outside investors’ capital.
Everest Group competes with Greenlight Re for insurers’ worldwide reinsurance business through overlapping broker channels. Watch Everest’s broker-distributed reinsurance business: brokers bring in most of Greenlight Re’s Open Market business, although Everest also sells directly to insurers.
Arch Capital competes with Greenlight Re to take on insurers’ specialty risks, including property, casualty and mortgage exposures. Its specialty reinsurance business is the closer comparison; Arch also sells insurance and mortgage insurance worldwide.
Axis Capital Holders Limited competes with Greenlight Re through AXIS Re for international business taking on insurers’ risks, while its larger specialty insurance business covers customers directly. Focus on AXIS Re rather than the insurance arm’s professional-liability policies for businesses, financial institutions and professional service providers.
Pelagos Insurance Capital Limited’s Fidelis Insurance Group competes with Greenlight Re to cover insurers’ property-catastrophe risks and also overlaps its marine, energy, aviation and credit exposures. Watch Fidelis’s Reinsurance segment for the catastrophe comparison; the other overlapping risks sit in its Insurance segment.
White Mountains competes with Greenlight Re through Ark and WM Outrigger Re, which take on insurers’ property and casualty risks. Its Ark/WM Outrigger segment is the relevant comparison, with Ark’s property-catastrophe contract pricing a concrete area to watch.
Markel Group offers a comparison for Greenlight Re’s mix of specialty underwriting and equity investing: Markel covers policyholders’ risks, while Greenlight Re takes on insurers’ risks, and both invest in public equities. Watch Markel’s underwriting profits and equity investment results separately, since it also owns substantial noninsurance businesses.
RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd. earningsRNR
RenaissanceRe’s report will show whether treaty reinsurance conditions for property, casualty and specialty risks are helping or squeezing Greenlight Re and its competitor.
Read RenaissanceRe’s property-and-casualty and specialty premiums alongside underwriting results and changes in prior-year loss reserves. Premium growth with underwriting profit and stable reserves would suggest insurers are still buying cover on terms that pay for claims and expenses, supporting the market Greenlight Re competes in. Weaker underwriting results or reserve increases would point to heavier claims costs or tighter terms that could also squeeze Greenlight Re’s underwriting profit.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
The Fed’s decision sets the benchmark interest rate that influences borrowing costs and returns on rate-sensitive investments, affecting Greenlight Re’s investment results and debt interest expense.
Expected4.0%Last release4.0%
If it comes in above expectations
Higher rates may reduce returns on rate-sensitive holdings in Solasglas and Innovations investments, while raising interest expense on debt that reprices or new borrowing costs.
If it comes in below expectations
Lower rates may ease pressure on rate-sensitive holdings in Solasglas and Innovations investments, while reducing interest expense on debt that reprices or the cost of new borrowing.
Greenlight Captial RE, LTD. earningsThis company
Greenlight Re’s report will show whether growth in premiums earned is translating into underwriting income after claims and expenses.
Read growth in net premiums earned alongside the combined ratio, the share of earned premiums consumed by claims and expenses; below 100% means underwriting profit. Growth with a ratio below 100% and little strengthening of prior-year loss reserves would show new business is still producing an underwriting profit. A rising ratio or larger reserve increases would mean claims costs or earlier loss estimates are eroding that result, even if premiums grow.
