Freshpet produces fresh dog and cat food and dog treats under its Freshpet brand. It makes food in its Freshpet Kitchens and distributes it refrigerated to retailers, which buy directly or through distributors. Pet owners mainly find its products in company-owned Freshpet Fridges inside retail stores. Freshpet arranges the fridges’ installation and maintenance; it earns money from selling food, rather than from the fridges themselves. The vast majority of sales come from the United States.
The business depends on retailers providing fridge space and consumers buying enough food from each location. A small group of customers accounts for most sales, with Walmart and Costco the largest; customers have no contractual obligation to keep buying. Keeping products refrigerated is essential, since fridge failures can spoil food. Manufacturing, labeling, storage and distribution must also comply with FDA and state pet-food and food-safety rules.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Freshpet’s growth hinges on pet owners choosing fresh food over alternatives from major rivals such as Mars and Nestlé, neither of which appears in this list.
General Mills competes with Freshpet for pet owners seeking higher-quality nutrition, selling natural pet food under Blue Buffalo while Freshpet sells fresh food. Blue Buffalo’s sales are worth watching for competition for those owners’ spending.
POST HOLDINGS, INC. sells branded and retailer-label pet food, competing with Freshpet’s fresh food for households’ pet-food budgets and store shelf space. Its pet-food sales, rather than its broader food business, are the line to watch for this competition.
J.M. Smucker’s cat food and pet snacks compete with Freshpet’s cat food and dog treats for pet owners’ purchases in retail stores. Its sales of cat food and pet snacks are the relevant parts to watch, rather than coffee or its other human foods.
SRX Global Inc sells Halo dog and cat food through stores and e-commerce, competing with Freshpet for health-conscious pet owners despite its much smaller scale. Its continuing pet health and wellness business generated about $6.5 million in net sales in the year ended September 30, 2025, putting the size of this rival in perspective.
Freshpet, Inc. earningsThis company
Freshpet sells fresh pet food through retail channels, and this report will show whether demand is translating into sales without ingredient and plant costs eating away at profit.
Read sales volume and price and product mix alongside gross margin—the share of sales left after product costs. Volume-led growth with a steady or rising margin would show that demand through retailers is turning into profit, with pricing or efficiency offsetting ingredient and plant costs; slower volume or a falling margin would point to weaker demand or costs outpacing those offsets. The company’s explanations of volume, price and mix, and costs will show whether growth has real profit support.
Retail Sales MoM (Oct)
Retail sales track what consumers spend in stores; stronger grocery, mass, pet specialty and club sales can support Freshpet Fridge demand and retailers’ orders for Freshpet food and treats, while weaker sales can reduce them.
Stronger retail sales suggest consumers are spending more, which may support Freshpet Fridge demand and retailer orders for Freshpet products; weaker sales may mean less demand and fewer orders.
POST HOLDINGS, INC. earningsPOST
Post Holdings’ pet-food sales will show whether a rival is gaining ground for the pet-food spending and retail shelf space Freshpet also needs.
Read Post Holdings’ pet-food sales, not its broader food results, as a signal about competition for pet-food spending and shelf space. Growth would show the rival attracting those buyers and could increase pressure on Freshpet’s sales and access to shelves; a decline could ease competition from Post, but a broad pullback in pet owners’ purchases could also weaken demand for Freshpet. The result describes Freshpet’s competitive backdrop, not Freshpet’s own sales.
