Company

Company overview

Five Below is a U.S. discount retailer that mixes changing, trend-led merchandise with everyday products. It buys rather than manufactures what it sells. Leisure products form its largest sales group, followed by fashion and home goods, then snacks and seasonal merchandise. Customers shop in its stores, on fivebelow.com or its mobile app, and through third-party delivery services.

The business depends on choosing products shoppers want and buying them cheaply enough to sell profitably at low prices. It uses a broad supplier base, but most merchandise is manufactured outside the United States, with China its largest source. Import tariffs can raise purchasing costs, while its low-price positioning limits how readily it can pass those costs to customers.

Growth depends on opening profitable stores and increasing sales at existing locations. New stores require suitable sites, lease terms and distribution capacity. The year-end holiday season is especially important to sales and earnings, so the company builds inventory ahead of it.
