Evolv Technologies Holdings helps schools, hospitals, stadiums and other facilities screen visitors and bags for concealed threats. Evolv Express screens people, while Evolv eXpedite automatically screens bags without a trained X-ray operator. Both combine screening hardware with Evolv’s proprietary software and cloud services; the offering also includes analytics, software updates, onsite support and repairs.
Customers either lease the equipment with a service subscription or buy it outright and subscribe to the software and services needed to operate it. Subscriptions provide most revenue, and related services are the next-largest source. Most customer agreements are non-cancelable, multi-year commitments, but customers have no obligation to renew when the initial term ends.
Evolv sells directly and through resellers, with one reseller customer accounting for a substantial share of revenue. It depends on Columbia Tech to manufacture its screening systems and has signed an agreement with Plexus Corp. to diversify manufacturing. Successful deployments also depend on customers’ security staff configuring and operating the systems correctly. An FTC consent order prohibits misleading or unsubstantiated marketing claims and requires compliance measures and record keeping.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Evolv’s results hinge on venues adopting and expanding weapons screening; Xtract One Technologies’ SmartGateway is another direct rival to watch that is missing from this list.
Liberty Defense’s HEXWAVE competes with Evolv Express for venues paying to screen visitors for concealed weapons without asking them to remove everyday possessions. HEXWAVE remains in early commercial deployment, so watch its sales to early adopters in North America, including stadiums, transportation customers and government facilities.
SoundThinking’s SafePointe competes with Evolv for facilities buying concealed-weapons screening, but SoundThinking also has a substantial business detecting gunshots for cities, universities and corporations. Watch SafePointe deployments rather than treating ShotSpotter coverage growth as a signal of demand for Evolv’s screening systems.
Evolv Technologies Holdings, Inc. earningsThis company
Evolv Technologies Holdings, Inc. sells screening systems with subscriptions and services, and this report will show whether customer adoption is growing recurring revenue while narrowing losses on hardware.
Read subscription and service revenue growth alongside product gross margin, the share of hardware revenue left after its direct costs. Growth in both recurring streams with an improving product margin would show broader customer use and lower hardware costs; recurring growth with a still-negative, unimproved product margin would mean expansion continues to carry hardware losses.
SoundThinking, Inc. earningsSSTI
SoundThinking, Inc.'s report on SafePointe deployments will show whether facilities such as schools and businesses are buying the concealed-weapons screening systems it offers in competition with Evolv.
Look at SafePointe deployments, not growth in SoundThinking's gunshot-detection business. More deployments would show that some facilities are buying this kind of screening system, supporting the demand backdrop Evolv faces; few deployments would suggest that demand has not broadly turned into purchases.
