Company

Company overview

Electra Battery Materials Corporation has not yet generated operating revenue. Its main project is an Ontario refinery that will turn mine-produced cobalt hydroxide into battery-grade cobalt sulfate for battery manufacturers. The business plan centers on processing material for others for a fee, known as toll processing. Electra has a tolling agreement with Glencore and also plans cobalt sulfate sales.

Battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution has committed to purchase most of the refinery’s planned cobalt sulfate production under an updated supply agreement. Electra expects Glencore and Eurasian Resources Group to provide a substantial share of its feedstock, mostly or entirely from mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Congolese export restrictions could disrupt those supplies, and Canadian forced-labor import rules require Electra to check their origins.

The refinery remains under development, and Electra needs additional financing to complete construction and commissioning. Until operations support its cash needs, it relies primarily on equity and debt funding. Construction and operation require permits, and its planned increase in production capacity needs permit amendments.

Electra also owns exploration-stage mineral properties, including Iron Creek in Idaho, and has tested the recovery of metals from recycled battery material. These are not established revenue-producing operations.

Electra’s prospects hinge on starting refinery production, securing cobalt feedstock from the DRC through Glencore and Eurasian Resources Group, and meeting its cobalt sulfate supply commitments to LG Energy Solution.

  • American Battery Technology Company overlaps Electra’s planned recycling business by recovering nickel, cobalt, manganese and lithium from the metal-bearing powder left after batteries are dismantled, known as black mass. Watch its sales of that powder under purchase contracts and its further processing into battery-grade materials: those are commercial routes for the materials Electra recovered in plant-scale trials, not yet a disclosed recurring sales business.

  • Nouveau Monde Graphite Inc. shares Electra’s push to supply battery makers from North America: it is developing Québec graphite anode-material capacity for Panasonic Energy, while Electra is developing Ontario cobalt sulfate capacity for LG Energy Solution. Watch progress at its First-Stage Bécancour Battery Material Plant, which is expected to fulfill its agreement with Panasonic Energy, its only active-anode-material purchase customer as of its annual information form.

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

The Fed’s policy rate—the benchmark that influences borrowing costs—matters to Electra because it needs financing to complete its cobalt refinery, and higher borrowing costs can leave less money for construction.
