Company overview

Emergent BioSolutions earns most of its revenue from products used to prepare for and respond to threats such as smallpox and anthrax. Governments buy vaccines such as ACAM2000, BioThrax and CYFENDUS, along with treatments, for emergency reserves. The U.S. government is its largest customer and buys primarily for the Strategic National Stockpile, generally under long-term, fixed-price contracts with annual purchase options.

Its other major business sells nasal sprays that reverse opioid overdoses. NARCAN supplies most commercial-product revenue and reaches public-health agencies, community organizations and consumers through retail pharmacies and online sellers. NARCAN is available without a prescription in the United States; KLOXXADO requires one. Emergent holds exclusive U.S. and Canadian sales and marketing rights to Hikma Pharmaceuticals’ KLOXXADO.

Emergent also earns fees for developing and manufacturing medicines for outside customers, plus research contracts and grants. These are smaller revenue sources, and it has reduced its emphasis on Bioservices.

The business depends on government funding, purchase-option decisions and delivery timing. Production also relies on single-source suppliers, including every NARCAN component. Manufacturing must meet FDA quality requirements, and products that fail required release testing cannot be sold.

Beyond this list, watch Bavarian Nordic’s Jynneos competing with ACAM2000 for government smallpox and mpox vaccine procurement, and Hikma’s licensed KLOXXADO product—both matter to Emergent’s results.

  • SIGA Technologies competes with Emergent for government stockpile purchases: its TPOXX and Emergent’s TEMBEXA both treat smallpox. Watch government orders for TPOXX for signs of procurement demand and competition facing TEMBEXA.

  • Teva threatens Emergent’s NARCAN sales with generic naloxone nasal spray and settlement commitments to supply states overdose-reversal medicines at no cost for 10–15 years. Watch those state supplies: free alternatives can erode the revenue Emergent earns selling NARCAN to government and public-health customers.

  • Amneal Pharmaceuticals’ generic naloxone nasal spray can take sales from Emergent’s NARCAN and put pressure on its price. Amneal sells generic medicines into retail markets; watch its nasal naloxone business for competition against NARCAN, which Emergent sells through retailers and to public-health buyers.

  • Amphastar Pharmaceuticals’ Rextovy nasal spray competes with Emergent’s NARCAN and KLOXXADO to reverse opioid overdoses. Watch Rextovy rather than Amphastar’s overall revenue to follow this rivalry with Emergent’s rescue sprays, sold through pharmacies and to government and public-health buyers.

  • Emergent relies on rights licensed by Indivior Pharmaceuticals to the naloxone formulations in NARCAN, which it sells to public-health customers and through retail channels. Indivior also sells SUBLOCADE and SUBOXONE Film to treat opioid use disorder, so its treatment business addresses the same public-health crisis rather than the same rescue use.

  • Emergent pays MacroGenics to develop and manufacture bulk drug substance, making it a supplier to watch for outsourced production. MacroGenics recorded $10.7 million of revenue from these manufacturing agreements in 2025; progress on the Emergent work is more relevant here than its antibody-development pipeline.
