Company overview

Amneal Pharmaceuticals’ largest business, Affordable Medicines, supplies lower-priced alternatives to branded drugs, including injectables and biosimilars. It makes most of these products itself and sells them to drug wholesalers, pharmacies and other healthcare buyers. It focuses on medicines that are difficult to formulate or manufacture: entering these markets before many competitors arrive can support higher prices, while additional competitors typically push prices down.

The company also sells branded medicines for nervous-system and endocrine disorders through Specialty, including CREXONT, RYTARY and UNITHROID. RYTARY now faces an authorized generic, illustrating how branded sales depend on market exclusivity. Its AvKARE business distributes medicines and medical supplies to U.S. government agencies, especially the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as retail and institutional buyers.

Cencora, McKesson Drug, Cardinal Health and CVS Health together provide most of Amneal’s revenue, and none has a long-term agreement guaranteeing future business. Keeping sales flowing depends on timely product launches and reliable, regulator-approved production. FDA approval is required for new products and certain supplier changes, while DEA production quotas limit the supply of controlled-substance products that generate substantial revenue.

Amneal's results hinge on complex generic launches and price erosion, so also watch Sandoz and Hikma, important competitors absent from this list.

  • Teva competes with Amneal to sell generic medicines and biosimilars to pharmaceutical purchasers, making its launches and pricing relevant to Amneal's sales. Watch Teva's U.S. generic launches and price erosion for signs of pressure on Amneal's Affordable Medicines business.

  • Viatris competes for Amneal's generic-medicine business across oral medicines, injections and complex dosage forms. Its manufacturing and supply news in these products helps gauge the supply reliability Amneal must match to win purchasers' business.

  • Dr. Reddy's competes with Amneal for generic-medicine sales by making medicines through integrated operations and pursuing differentiated, first-to-market products. Watch its complex-product launches: new entrants can squeeze the prices and volumes that make Amneal's high-barrier generics attractive.

  • Amphastar Pharmaceuticals, Inc. competes with Amneal for U.S. sales of technically challenging injectable and nasal medicines. Its launches in these product groups are worth watching because additional competition can pressure Amneal's generic prices and volumes.

  • ANI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. competes with Amneal for U.S. generic purchasing contracts, including hormonal medicines and medicines formulated to control how quickly they release the drug. Watch ANI's launches and market-share gains in these niches, where price, contract terms and reliable supply decide who wins orders.

  • Supernus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Amneal both sell Parkinson's medicines, so adoption of Supernus's treatments matters to Amneal's branded CNS business. Competition also runs the other way: after Amneal launched generic Namzaric in January 2025, Supernus's acquired Adamas business expected no further royalties on U.S. Namzaric sales.

  • Jazz Pharmaceuticals competes with Amneal's generic sodium oxybate for U.S. narcolepsy patients through its branded Xyrem and Xywav medicines. Watch Jazz's sales of those two products among narcolepsy patients for evidence of generic penetration; Amneal's volume-limited right to sell against historical Xyrem sales ended at year-end 2025.

  • Alkermes Inc. plc faces Amneal's generic injectable risperidone in the schizophrenia market, where Alkermes sells ARISTADA, and has licensed Amneal to sell a future U.S. generic version of VIVITROL. Watch VIVITROL generic-entry news for Amneal's next sales opportunity, distinct from the injectable competition already under way.

  • Bausch Health's patent case stands between Amneal and sales of its proposed generic Xifaxan, a gastrointestinal medicine accounting for approximately 85% of Bausch's U.S. Salix revenue. Watch the litigation and final FDA approval: Amneal received tentative approval in January 2025, but final approval remained blocked by a court order.

  • Pfizer competes with Amneal in generic medicines but also controls the Metsera collaboration for medicines to be made at funded Amneal facilities. Pfizer shortened the term to four years from first commercial sale and eliminated agreed rebates and commercial-product payments to Amneal, while leaving construction funding of up to $100 million for two Indian facilities intact, subject to annual caps.

  • ARS Pharmaceuticals, Inc.'s needle-free neffy competes with Amneal's injectable Adrenaclick for emergency epinephrine use, with ARS selling primarily to U.S. drug wholesalers. Watch neffy's uptake and reimbursement coverage to gauge the competitive appeal of avoiding an injection versus Amneal's product.
