Duolingo lets people study languages with most learning content available free and no time limit on using its courses. Learners who want additional features pay for Super Duolingo or Duolingo Max; Max adds features such as AI-powered Video Call. These subscriptions provide most of the company’s revenue. Advertisers also pay to reach free users through display and video ads, while users can buy virtual goods in the app.
The business depends on keeping learners engaged, persuading some to subscribe and retaining them as paying customers. Free users also bring in learners through word of mouth, and their learning activity helps Duolingo test and improve its product. A smaller business, the Duolingo English Test, charges test takers a one-time fee and depends on education programs accepting its results.
Duolingo relies heavily on Apple’s App Store and Google Play for app access and in-app payments, with Apple handling most of its revenue. Both platforms take a share of payments they process and control distribution and payment terms. Subscription billing must also comply with rules governing automatic renewals and cancellations.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Duolingo’s results depend mainly on converting language learners into paying subscribers and keeping them, but important rivals Babbel and Busuu are missing from this list.
Pearson competes for Duolingo’s online language learners and also offers English-proficiency tests, alongside the Duolingo English Test that charges test takers a one-time fee. Watch Pearson’s English Language Learning business rather than its broader education results for developments in these overlapping markets.
CHEGG, INC. competes for learners who might pay for Duolingo, selling language subscriptions that combine self-paced lessons with live tutor-led classes. Its courses in 14 languages offer a concrete alternative to Duolingo’s paid app features, making its language-subscription offering the part to watch.
Coursera, Inc. shares Duolingo’s challenge of attracting individual learners with free content and persuading them to pay for more learning through subscriptions. Watch Coursera Plus, which charges individuals monthly or annually for courses and credentials, for signs of willingness to pay for self-paced online learning.

Duolingo’s report will show whether it can turn free learners into paying subscribers while keeping the cost of serving paid features in check.
Read changes in paid subscribers alongside subscription bookings: bookings reflect customer purchases, while subscription revenue is generally recognized over the service period. Then check gross margin, the share of revenue left after direct service costs. More paid subscribers and higher bookings with a steady margin would show Duolingo is converting more learners without letting service costs consume most of the gains; slower growth with a falling margin would point to weaker conversion or rising costs of serving its features.
CHEGG, INC. earningsCHGG
Chegg’s report will show whether its language subscriptions attract paying learners, revealing how strongly this alternative competes with Duolingo for spending on language study.
Look for what Chegg says about paid demand and renewals for its language subscriptions; if it does not report language separately, overall subscription results cannot establish how those courses are doing. Stronger demand and renewals would show that learners will pay for self-paced courses paired with live tutoring, but would not prove they will choose Duolingo’s app. Weaker demand would suggest this alternative is gaining less traction for paid learners, leaving Duolingo’s own ability to retain and convert learners as the key question.
