Company

Company overview

Danaos Corporation supplies ships that liner companies use to move containers. These customers pay charter hire for the use of its vessels, and containerships generate most of its revenue. Contracts generally fix the hire rate for several years. Under its usual time charters, customers pay fuel, port and canal costs, while Danaos pays for crews, insurance, maintenance and repairs. Hire generally stops when a ship is unavailable for service.

A small group of liner customers supplies most of the revenue, with CMA CGM and MSC particularly important. The business depends on these customers honoring their contracts and on finding new employment when charters end. Existing fixed-rate contracts limit immediate exposure to market swings, but renewal rates depend on demand for container transport and the supply of ships.

Danaos also earns from a smaller drybulk fleet carrying commodities, principally iron ore and coal. These ships work mainly on short-term or voyage contracts, so their income responds more quickly to market rates; on voyage contracts, Danaos also pays fuel and other voyage costs. Danaos Shipping and Danaos Chartering provide essential vessel-management and commercial services. The fleet must meet environmental and operating requirements, including emissions and ballast-water rules, which can require vessel modifications or restrict operations.

Danaos depends chiefly on contracted containership hire and liner customers’ ability to pay: watch CMA CGM and MSC, absent from this list but responsible for 21% and 16% of its 2025 revenue, respectively.

  • Costamare and Danaos compete for liner companies that pay fixed daily rates to lease their large containership fleets. Costamare’s new charter rates and contract lengths offer a read on the terms Danaos faces when its ships come up for renewal.

  • Global Ship Lease and Danaos compete to rent similarly sized containership fleets at fixed daily rates to many of the same liner customers. Its charter renewals show what those shared customers will pay to keep ships employed.

  • Navios Maritime Partners competes with Danaos to lease containerships to liner operators, and both also earn hire from customers using drybulk vessels. Navios had locked in all available containership days for 2026 on long-term charters as of March 5, 2026, making its market-exposed drybulk hire more useful for tracking Danaos’s spot-market bulk business.

  • Euroseas competes with Danaos for customers renting containerships, particularly smaller feeder ships and Panamax vessels sized for the Panama Canal. Its average daily charter earnings offer a view of rental conditions in those segments, rather than Danaos’s larger-ship business as a whole.

  • Star Bulk competes with Danaos to carry large bulk cargoes for charterers such as iron ore miners and commodity traders, while Danaos’s holding of Star Bulk shares also brings its stock-price changes and dividends into earnings. Watch those investment gains and dividends separately from vessel hire: they are not charter revenue.

  • Seanergy competes for customers hiring large drybulk ships in the same market as Danaos, using Capesize and larger Newcastlemax vessels. Its customers pay hire tied to the Baltic Capesize rate benchmark, making that hire a guide to rate conditions for Danaos’s mainly spot-employed Capesize ships.

  • Himalaya Shipping leases its large Newcastlemax bulk carriers to charterers in the same market as Danaos, with hire predominantly tied to Capesize rates. Watch the index-linked portion of its hire for conditions affecting Danaos’s bulk ships, rather than assuming vessels temporarily switched to fixed rates move with the market.

  • Genco and Danaos compete to transport the same major bulk cargoes for paying customers, with Genco’s large Capesize and Newcastlemax fleet carrying iron ore, coal and bauxite. News about those cargoes is more relevant to Danaos’s bulk business than Genco’s smaller ships carrying grain and steel products.

  • Safe Bulkers’ eight Capesize ships compete with Danaos’s Capesize fleet for customers paying to move large bulk cargoes. Watch its Capesize charter terms for iron ore and coal transport, rather than treating results from its broader drybulk fleet as a direct match for Danaos.
