Company

Company overview

Circle Internet Group issues USDC and EURC, digital tokens used for payments that are backed by reserves and redeemable at face value for dollars and euros, respectively. Approved institutional customers use Circle Mint to send money to Circle and receive tokens, or return tokens for money from the reserves. Other users generally buy and sell through exchanges and other distributors rather than dealing directly with Circle.

Most revenue comes from interest and dividends on those reserves, not fees for issuing tokens. Most USDC reserves sit in the Circle Reserve Fund, a government money market fund managed by BlackRock, with assets held by BNY; the rest sits in bank accounts. Reserve earnings depend mainly on how much stablecoin remains in circulation and the interest rates the assets earn.

Distribution relies on a few large partners. Coinbase is a significant USDC partner and receives a substantial share of reserve income under its agreement with Circle. Binance also distributes USDC and receives distribution payments. These arrangements help bring USDC to users but determine how much reserve income Circle keeps. Settlement banks move money into and out of Circle Mint.

Circle needs financial-services permissions in the markets it serves. Those permissions and local rules constrain its services and reserve investments, while institutional customers must pass identity, sanctions and other compliance checks.

Circle Internet Group’s earnings hinge on USDC circulation, short-term interest rates and how it shares the economics with distribution partners including Coinbase and Binance.

  • Coinbase Global shares in the reserve income from Circle Internet Group’s USDC, so larger USDC balances and higher reserve yields benefit both, but Circle pays Coinbase for helping distribute it. Coinbase charges consumers and institutions for crypto trading; its USDC-related revenue is the line to watch for growth in the stablecoin and the income Circle shares with its partner.

  • Gemini Space Station, Inc.’s GUSD competes with Circle Internet Group’s USDC as a dollar-backed stablecoin, and both issuers earn income on the reserves backing their coins. Gemini mainly earns trading fees from retail and institutional customers, so its GUSD reserve interest income—not overall trading revenue—is the line most directly tied to this rivalry.

  • BitGo Holdings, Inc. competes for institutions that also use Circle Internet Group’s stablecoin issuance and infrastructure services, offering help with stablecoins through Stablecoin-as-a-Service alongside digital-asset custody and wallets. BitGo charges clients account, custody and certain asset-transfer fees; its Stablecoin-as-a-Service revenue is the line to watch for this overlap with Circle.

  • Bullish and Circle Internet Group both serve the institutional crypto-trading ecosystem: Bullish facilitates spot and derivatives trades, while Circle supplies dollar stablecoins that provide trading liquidity and earns income on their reserves. Watch activity in Bullish’s institutional trading business for a view of the customer demand behind that liquidity, rather than its separate data, media and events business.
